I'll have a lot of vacation time in both January and February and have thought about working at a camp to pick up an extra 2-4 million won. Should I ask my school for permission? |

Don't quote me on this, but I think that if you work at a camp that is not at your school and not mandated by your Office of Education, it would be an illegal second job. Am I wrong? |

Yes, but it does say in the contract that I can't work a part time job unless I get the school's permission. |

I did it. My school was furious, but they couldn't really say no to the other school when they asked about it so I still got to work the camp, and got my 2.1 million won.
I want to say if your school likes you enough to give you a ton of vacation, it should be no problem. |

it totally depends on what kind of relationship you have with them.
it also depends on the camp - do they require a legal visa?
allegedly, the new rules are supposed to make it easier to add/change workplaces.
when I worked for SMOE, I knew other teachers who received permission to work at camps - but then when I asked, I was denied. It really, I mean really pissed me off.
I was told if I wanted to work why hadn't I spoken up earlier and they would have placed me in a ps camp (yeah the ones that pay like, uh, 300,000 a week over your regular pay).
yet the previous break (winter) we had been told we had to work a camp - so I didn't really know I wasn't going to work one!
word might get around you want to work and then YOU will be placed in a ps camp - not nearly as fruitful as the private ones.
so, wait as long as you can to ask - as in the very last minute. make your plans if you can anyway. then ask very nicely and bring a bribe along such as some rice cake or something - wouldn't hurt to start paving the way now -
good luck! |
