My students told me that 3 or 4 high schoolers committed suicide after writing the test. I never saw it in the newspapers. Anyone know the details?

I hear the media was urged to keep a lid on post-test incidents & controversy this year. In light of an already high suicide rate & recent high-profile cases, copycat syndrome is a legitimate concern.

they have their mothers to blame!!

so when the parents are buring their daughter for only scoring a 84 on her test, they can see if making them study like crazy robots was really worth it in the end!!

so in return drove the daughter to do a swan dive off her 14th floor balcony becuase her mother would be satisfied with anything but 100%

like her mother even got 100% or even attended a hakwon!!

I HATE KOREAN MOTHERS!!!

My co-teacher left work early yesterday to look for her son because he messed up on part of the test and she couldn't find him. I didn't say much to her but all I was thinking is I hope for her he didn't do something drastic.

Agreed. They put too much pressure on their children and are always negative about anything their children do.

Twelve years ago now, some friends and I were on our way out for a beer. I decided to cut through the sand area of the school. Saw some flashing lights so I decided to give up on my shortcut plan and headed along the fence. Out of the corner of my eye I saw what looked like someone standing there. Looked over to see a teenager that had hung himself. He was just dangling there. I looked away as fast as I could. The cops were going throuh his things. I jumped the fence. My friends on the sidewalk all saw it too. We all went home after that. It was right after the big exam in Irwon-dong.

Suicide is a major problem in this country. However, are 3 or 4 suicides high? Of course, one suide is too much, in my opinion. It's a tragedy when someone commits suicide. So much of children's self-worth is based on grades and tests in Korea and many of them feel worthless otherwise. In the country of Jordan, they have major tests they must pass, and they are hard, and getting a 70 is a decent grade, but the kids have a life when they are in high school. The same applies to kids in France. They have a tough enough high school exam, but French kids have a life. In Germany, kids are protesting their exams and the way kids are pushed into trades too early without being given a chance.

I say, let kids be kids...

Absolutely and unequivocally, yes.

I am acquainted with a few of them right now.

Even if I wasn't, how many millions are there? I suppose they are responsible for their own suicides as well as their husbands, thereby making them responsible for nearly every Korean suicide? C'mon , it was a blanket-statement and I called it out because they are never correct. No biggie.

I've met hundreds of Koreans who credit their mothers for their own success. They're not pressured or stressed or hold any grudges for studying hard back then.

Do some mothers push their kids too hard? Of course. Is it a bit of an epidemic of sorts, yeh, I'd agree.

Are they ALL hopeless, heartless, windbags? Hardly. They're human beings after all.

That's all I said. But instead of "some" let's say "almost all."
Glad you agree. Wink

Well I hope Korea keeps its suicide culture cause in our cultures we tend to murder.. This way they cause less damage. Although Murdering might be good for population control.
