As was mentioned at least twice in the clip, because they are cheap. Haven't you ever in your life needed to save some coin? I once had to live in a caboose for three weeks with no electricity or water. I would have been delighted with the comforts of a goshiwon.

Sure I've had to. I lived for 4 months in a flop house and another 2 months in a squat. But 12 months in a goshiwon = **Shudder**

Many reasons to live in a Goshitel:

1. Its cheap.

2. Students don't need anythign fancy.

3. You fight with your spouse and you don't want to fork over cash for a hotel room, jsut go to a Goshitel

From what I've read goshiwons run the gamut of windowless Old Boy-style prisons to places which, by dormitory standards, are quite nice; small but with windows and bathrooms.
If you don't have any key money (천세?) and want to save money, a decent goshiwon's not a bad idea. Of course, the decent ones are more expensive, but still cheaper than an apartment.

You lived in a squat and you're cutting up on people living in Goshiwons?

This one looks a bit better.

It has its own bathroom and even its own built-in geek.

True, but at least the squat had windows and there were only four of us sharing the same bathroom!

So the squat had running water? Sounds like a nice squat.

That is the key - get in there before it is cut off.

So is that picture in your avatar a picture of that guy from 90210 before or after the episode where he moved into a squat?

It's nice to save coin, but most people want to be comfortable at home. Have a few creature comforts, and be able to shit in their own bathroom.

Surely, if you live in a dive, you just go out more and spend more that way anyway.

Wait...

Maybe that's the point of living in a fleapit in the first place.
