My old Laptop's graphics card has fried, a screw from god knows where jammed the fan and the card over heated and died. I assume it's the card anyway, it boots fine and I can log into windows, but the screen has numerous horizonal lines that make the screen unreadable. The same happens when I hook up an external monitor so i know it isnt the lcd.
It is this laptop http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2723 Acer TravelMate 8204WLMi
# Intel Core Duo T2500 (2.0 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 Cache)
# Intel 945PM Chipset
# 15.4" WSXGA+ TFT LCD
# ATi Mobility Radeon X1600 256 MB GDDR3 (upto 512 MB with Hypermemory)
# 120 GB 5400rpm SATA HDD
# 2 GB DDR2-667
Will I realistically be able to get it repaired for a reasonable price? The laptop is from home, so i've had quotes for a repair over there for about 150pounds which is about 300,000 won. So anything around that price would be good, I just don't know a good way to go around getting it repaired. Anyone know a company or a store in yongsan/technomart that is worth checking out?
Hope you can help! |

I got my computer repaired after spilling soy sauce on it (long story...) as I short circuited the mainboard. I had to get that replaced which was about 350,000 won. My total cost was around 550,000won but that was because I wanted to get all my data recovered and get the laptop cover replaced (again, another long story...). It took them about two weeks to recover the data/ replace the mainboard and a week for the cover (they had to send it to HP in Korea). Also, I should mention I got this fixed in a smaller city so the prices were fixed accordingly... I know our situations are different, but I hope this helps. |

It sounds like this computer has two graphics cards, the Intel integrated 945 and the one you think is broken. You could try booting it up with a Linux Live CD such as System Rescue or Knoppix and see if there are lines on the screen or not. Fixing this problem might be cheaper than buying a new computer. There is one guy at Technomart who I strongly recommend (although he can't speak a word of English). You could try to get it fixed at Yongsan but I don't trust some of the guys there. |
