I believe I read somewhere that for Brits the Korean pension is put into your UK pension. So you do get your money back but not until you're eligible for pension back home.

Not going to happen until the UK and Korea engage in talks about a reciprocal treaty to allow it.

Don't be holding your breath. The current treaty is for totalization only so you will have to wait till you are old and grey to collect it.

Yeah that's what I thought. Occasionally I read something that makes me wonder if things changed or are about to, but it's always a let down.

Do you think it's worth making a petition or group to try and get the policy changed?

Here are a couple of quotes from the Australian Embassy website:

"A social security agreement with Korea was signed in Canberra on 6 December 2006."

"The Agreement is expected to come into effect on 1 October 2008, after the necessary treaty, legislative and administrative processes are completed in both countries."

That shows a rough timeline of how long it would take from the agreement, to signing the treaty. But how long was the process in getting to the agreement? And who played a part in that? Expats? Was there some kind of petition? It would be good to know how the Aussies went about getting it changed, as it obviously worked.

I think it's time for us to get pro-active on this. If we succeed, I will gladly buy the first, second and third round! F' it... drinks all night!!*

* If you happen to be in Wales when I collect my monster pension payment, that is!

OK then, how about a Facebook group to get started with. I'm actually very busy these days but will try and do some reading up on the topic. Any suggestions for the group name?

Very Happy

Koreans have to pay National Insurance if the live and work in the UK. NI includes pension. Koreans don't get their NI contributions, or even part of it, refunded when they leave the UK. So, there is no incentive for the Korean government to refund our pension contributions.
