|
|
I'm an older teacher here. That mean there are some health things that tend to hit older people that I have (nothing serious, unless you were 20 years old and had such things). So, they got my health check back the other day, and it passed, but then the supervisor who got it decided she needed to make it known that my health situation became everyone's knowledge. Then throughout the day, other teachers, secretaries, the janitor, wandering minstrels, and some guy who sleeps on the couch who I'm not sure even works there kept coming up to me and commenting about my health profile. I mean, EVERYONE. At one point, I asked if we should post my health check on the front door of the place so the mothers could see it and comment on it, too. Then another teacher (Korean) told me: "Welcome to health check in Korea".
I'm not upset. I just found it really bizarre to have everyone know my health status and then feel they need to come to me and comment on it. It's not like it was a horrific situation, like AIDS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome or some other evil sounding thing, but wow, talk about a day of awkwardness at the workplace.
I would have felt better if they would have found the sex tape with me and Paris instead. |

Paris has the only copy. She refuses to release it because she says she doesn't like attention drawn to herself. |

If your allergic to "nosy" try the Middle East. They'll generally leave you be. |

Crud, I know what you mean. Field trips that everyone knows about except you, holidays/days off that you find out about at the last minute, various school events that you find out about the day of that everyone else has know about for weeks, etc.
Being a foreign teacher here is very much like being Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone. "Okay, kids, we're almost at _____ (insert field trip location). Hey, where's the waygookin teacher?" |

I don't know about you guys.. I like being invisible.. Its a great excuse. Sorry can't go to the mandatory Teacher dinner/ I have plans. I don't drink Soju I'm alergic to Alcohol. Sorry can't change my work hours for your camp, I have plans. Its great. People finnaly leave me the f0ck alone. Korea is like a deserted island for me, except there is 50 million ants that sometimes get in to my stuff. I just squish them or brush them off. |

Well, since your whole school knows by now you may as well post it here for posterity. Pic of your health check results or it never happened. |

LOL... welcome to the land of... WTF is privacy?
My co-teachers are much the same as the ajjumas in the supermarket check-out line. While they may not try to 'butt in', they can't resist looking in the waygookin's basket/cart. |

There is no privacy here. Some people call it communal and others call it a form of communism left over from an authoritarian regime. It all depends upon your perspective. |

so true, once my cousin and her husband made plans to go out to dinner with her friend. At the last minute my cousin became really really sick so she had to stay home but she told them to just go have dinner. Half the neighborhood then proceeded to call her to tell her that her husband was cheating on her. Oh Arab culture. |

Had a discusssion with my co-teacher about this just the other day. The issue of medical privacy is quite novel to Koreans, but its starting to gain traction. Just 5 years ago, K-teachers had their med test results posted communally. This is no longer the case. |
