I am booking a return from Seoul to Dublin via Paris. I want to go to France a few days before I am due to return (on a separate ticket) and then take my flight from Paris to Seoul. This means I will not use the flight from Dublin to Paris, but only the part from Paris to Seoul.

The Korean lady from Gmarket claims I can't do this, but I see no problem. I'll have a ticket for both, so why shouldn't I be able to just use part of it? I think she's talking out of her arse, but I can't be sure. Has anybody done this before?

she is right, iof you don't show for the first sector of your flight then you will be classed as a no show for the entire flight. How about seeing if you can change your ticket dating so that it is actually a stopover in Paris? You should ideally have booked it like that in the first place as it's not always possible afterwards, but call the airline and see.

The travel agent is right. What do you think will happen when you don't check in for the first part of your ticket, from Dublin to Paris? The airline will cancel the whole itinerary.

Here is a nice story to explain airline "logic". It is called "If airlines sold paint".
http://www.suddenlysenior.com/airlinessellpaint.html

Here's a quote that relates to your question:

Clerk: How many gallons (of paint) do you want?

Customer: I don't know exactly. Maybe five gallons. Maybe I should buy six gallons just to make sure I have enough.

Clerk: Oh no, sir, you can't do that. If you buy the paint and then don't use it, you will be liable for penalties and possible confiscation of the paint you already have.

Customer: What?

Clerk: That's right. We can sell you enough paint to do your kitchen, bathroom, hall, and north bedroom, but if you stop painting before you do the bedroom, you will be in violation of our tariffs.

Customer: But what does it matter to you whether I use all the paint? I already paid you for it!

Clerk: Sir, there's no point in getting upset; that's just the way it is. We make plans based upon the idea that you will use all the paint, and when you don't, it just causes us all sorts of problems.

Crazytigger is right. It's standard worldwide that if you don't show for part of your flight, it's over; you're on your own.

Uh, Gmarket has travel agent services?

Maybe it was a few years ago but I asked the same question if I could get off in Fiji for a night or two and hop back on for Auckland (Korean Air) and was told, 'Sure.'
