|
|
Hello all,
My name is Laura Huffman and I'm currently researching ESL in South Korea with the University of Tasmania in Launceston, Australia. I am conducting a brief online survey of English teachers and professors in South Korea. This survey is completely non-profit and will be used solely for academic purposes. The purpose of the survey is to prompt a discussion and cultural analysis of what it means to be a TESOL good teacher from a Korean perspective. The survey is completely anonymous and does not require an email address. Surveymonkey.com is a reputable survey provider and you will not receive any sort of spam.
I greatly value your expertise and experience and would be extremely grateful if you would complete my survey. Please donate 15 minutes of your time to further academic ESL research.
The survey is open only to people who are currently teaching or have recently taught English in South Korea in some fashion.
Please find and complete the survey here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=cbu_2fQZzNY_2bdVUMOncR_2bXSA_3d_3d
Thank you for your participation. |

i did it, but i think you have to think more carefully about some of the questions especially in the section on assessment. questions like
Exams are a good way to assess a students knowledge and abilities.
A good teacher develops exams based on his/her students skills.
A good teacher teaches with the purpose of raising test scores on standardized tests.
the answer to these questions depend on the nature of the class to be taken and nature of assessment that is expected. if a teacher has the role to prepare their students for a standardized test, than that is their role pure and simple, same as if it is their role to develop exams based on student skills. whether the examination will be summative (for standardized evaluation) or formative (to aid in assisting future instruction) is often out of the teacher's hands, but it is not our place to say whether they are teaching well or not. context is important there. some exams are a good way of assessing student's abilities, others are not. you must be mindful of the nature of the assessment and its purposes. |

Done. Overall, it's a pretty good survey because you offer the option for feedback at the end. Korea has a long way to go before it has a better education system. Good luck with your results. |

Well, I now know I won't be doing the survey. I don't believe in labeling people here good or bad, at least from a teaching standpoint, if you want to call it 'teaching'. I don't have a degree in education, so I'm not qualified to make that judgement. Learners have to be taken into account when attaching those types of labels even if one is qualified to make that call.
I do know one fact, though: There are no good teachers without good students. |

Thanks for your feedback. This is an opinion survey for teachers in Korea, so there is no right or wrong answer. Simply being a teacher qualifies you for this survey. The phrase "A good teacher..." is used to evaluate different aspects of teaching. |
