I don't usually get colds because I take vitamin C, multi-vitamins, get lots of sleep, and I stay away from sick morons. But some of you will get sick, especially newbies who aren't used to constantly sick students and cold temps.
So, if you get sick and need EFFECTIVE cold medicine, get to Hannam Market in Itaewon and get some REAL cold medicine. Wink

Wylies,

Thanks for heads up. I've been popping vitamin C everyday since I went to one of my classes and three of my students were sick. On Wednesday I went and got a flu shot. I'm hoping this year to make it through the winnter without getting sick. We'll see if it actually happens.

Okay. I had checked other black market stores and hadn't found any cold medicine.

I don't want to set off a buying frenzy, but they always seem to run out when the "cold and flu" season hits high gear. Get it NOW.
The good stuff is in the front part- "Dandy's Grocery." It wasn't cheap, either-11,500 for Theraflu- BUT I'd rather be prepared than simply hoping some Korean placebo actually works. Wink

I bought some Theraflu not long ago (from Hannam). When the cold/flu season starts, it knocks out most of my students and co-workers.

Make sure you check the expiration date on the products!

I don't shop there but I have heard the same thing from people who do shop there. I've also heard that the prices at Hannam Market are so crazy that many people don't go there anymore.

Medicine doesn't really expire. The FDA mandated that drugs have expiration dates. The drug companies want you to keep buying medicine so they stamp an expiration date.

The date just says that the drugs are 100% potent within that date. Even after 10-15 years, the drug may go down to like 90% potency.

I stocked up on Nyquil cherry flavor - both liquid and gelcaps the last time I went home. Good stuff. Another one you didn't mention is Alieve-D - indespesible!

Last year I didn't get sick - here's what I did and I think it really helped...

I keep a package of 5 surgeon type masks in my briefcase. Every time I get on a bus or a train, on goes the mask. Start doing this immediately, because people are going to start getting sick this week or next.

Those masks cut down your chance of picking up germs when Koreans spit, sneeze and cough without covering their mouths.

I've seen Theraflu at several drugstores here, pretty awful to take but it will knock out a fever. It's VERY good to know where to find NyQuil though.

You don't have to go to an import store for Theraflu. They have it in regular Korean drugstore chains, too. I saw it at those W+ stores.
