This was done a few years ago and was halted by the city. The tourist cabs were stopped because there were many complaints of the drivers ripping off tourists and Koreans. Taking the long wrong way was commonplace with these guys.
The article says that they will charge higher prices. It sounds like they are legalizing the price gouging of the past and calling it a service charge. |

It didn't sound like a very good idea to me either.
They already have free translation services in most cabs, although I've never tried it.
Does anyone have any experience with the phone translation services offered in cabs?
How would you rate your experience? |

| That idea is absolutely "sparkling". Only a few people would call up a taxi cab. Anyway, it's not like we know how to describe where we live if we're new. It might be useful for tourists at hotels, but they can take regular cabs. It might help some people, but, generally, it's a dumb idea. I might take one of those cabs just for the fun of it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to take one. |

| Who dreams up this crap? No driver would want one of these cabs. How many foreigners in Seoul are in a taxi at any one time? And they say there will be 1000 of these new cabs. Just more nonsense to make Korea seem more international and inviting to tourists. SEOUL WILL NEVER BECOME A MAJOR TOURIST DESTINATION. Except for tour buses of Chinese maybe. |

| Also, fixed fares depending on hours and distances will be offered to prevent possible disputes. |
That doesn't sound too bad. It would be nice if they showed the destinations.
Like if there was a fixed rate cab, from Gangnam to Hongdae for 20,000w, then that would be a good deal.
Also, after 12am, cabs in Seoul are a f-ing bitch to take. IF you jsut want to go someplace 10-15 minutes away, the cabs refuse to take you because it isn't far enoguh.
I would definitely pay the extra fare if it means it'll save me and a couple friends a 20 minute drunk walk home in the dead of winter.
I think the foreigner only cab would only be advantageous in certain situations. |

I find the opposite also true. NO cabs want to go from Gangnam to north of the Han. They are stationed near Gangnam and are worried no one north of the Han will be going to Gangnam.
After the Friday DJ Shadow show, cabs didn't to take me to Jongno-gu from Hongdae. I was getting irate and was about to start taking taxi permit pictures until one man let us in. He said our destination was too far and that the taxi drivers were about to have a shift change.
I don't think further separation of services between Koreans and foreigners are going to help Korea become of hub of anything except xenophobia. |

| Charging extra is not that bad considering, assuming they are English speaking drivers. You know what a bitch it is to learn a language. Some rewards of that are definitely in order. However I despise having any such services. I even hate English menus in restaurants, so meh. |

Most of the time I have taken a taxi here, either the driver speaks good enough English, I have a map on me that shows him exactly where I want to go, or we somehow come to an agreement of which direction to go, and he takes me there. I've only ever had one taxi driver state he couldn't understand and ask me and the person I was with to leave the cab. And what made that so funny was I was with a Korean national who spoke fluent Korean (the guy just couldn't figure out how to read her map...come to think of it, I have yet to be able to read one of her maps either. ) |

I hate the fixed cab rate. They always overcharge.
The only place i've had trouble getting a taxi in was Jongno. Those bastards don't stop if you don't look like a business men. Actually near Gangnam station can be bad around midnight too. |

This is a reaction to 90% of all cabs going "call taxi" by 2009. Some foreign group said, "wait, so I'm never going to be able to get a cab from 2009 because I don't speak the hangookmal?"
Then they do these sparkling things in reaction to the reaction of their dopey ideas. |
