|
|
we have a trip to thailand booked for the month of january...
with all the news lately i am a little hesistant to stick to these plans. what are people's thoughts about the deomstrations and warnings of the area? we were not planning to go to Bangkok at all, but still I read that the other areas in Thailand are not safe either and that attacks could occur at any time....
i guess i am just curious if other people are put off by this.. |

| I'll be monitoring the situation until my departure date, but as of now I don't feel too intimidated by the idea of going to Thailand. Maybe I'm just naive, but I feel like unless the PAD is protestiing tourism or the government is engaging in genocidal behavior or something, it's probably no more dangerous in most respects than where I lived before I came to Asia. |

Don't cancel.
If the flight can't operate because of some logistical reason (like the closure of the airport) --- the airline is obligated to provide you with an alternative arrangement (refund, different date, different routing etc.).
Thailand overall remains safe. It is not like it is in total meltdown - it is just isolated problems and there are areas like Phuket that are completely unaffected. |

| Well i`m going there too in january and im worried. Remember you are flying in and out of Bangkok most likely. The "rebels" or anti-government protesters have taken control of the airport? STranded thousands and flights delayed. I dont get why they dont strongarm these people and lock them away. |

Right, Thailand is really not dangerous unless you go to where the PAD is and tell them they are wrong for what they're doing. I like how up in Chiang Mai, one PAD was shot and dragged out of his car, because it's pissing off working Thais that they are trying to disrupt the country and their livelyhoods dependent on having environment stable enough for tourism and keeping the economy going as to keep people working.
These PAD are wealtheir than the working class and have the money to fart around all day every day like the way they're doing. They're taking a big fart on their working class countrymen, their country, and their king. I feel they should be stopped by force. The majority of Thais do not want to over throw the government nor have a war nor cause tourists any problems. |

| I wonder where the military stands on this. They`re obviously the dealbreaker for both groups. |

| so phuket seems to be unaffected by all the protests? i don't suppose it's easy to get a direct international flight there instead of landing and changing planes in bangkok? |

They had shut the Phuket airport down in the past, not sure if it's still down.
I hope it will be fine by January as I'm planning a trip there too, but if you wanted to be extra safe, you could fly in to Cambodia or Vietnam and travel to Thailand from there.
If you wanted to leave from Thailand once your vacation is up and the airports are still shut down then you could easily get a charter back to Vietnam or Cambodia in a smaller city's airport for maybe $100 USD, maybe cheaper. |

I need to buy a ticket to Thailand for a couple weeks from now (Chiang Mai thru Bangkok, or Bangkok).
So if I buy even when PAD has blocked the airport, the company still has to try to get me in?
How could they possibly route me differently to Bangkok?
I wanted to leave Dec 13 or so. Any suggestions? |

The protests are in Bangkok but PAD has a heavy presence in Phuket. They could shut it down if something sparks them. Chiang Mai also has an international airport, and its guaranteed to remain safe. There were pro-government militias/protesters guarding it from PAD recently.
There are lots of flights into Phuket from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. |

Bangkok has effectively three airports (Suvarnambhumi and Don Mueang which are the main airports) + Utapao airport (2hrs south of BKK).
Some (but not all) flights are being diverted to Utapao (and also to Phuket) as we speak. If you don't want that, you get rebooked to a later date or refunded. |

No, he was trying to run over pro-government supporters in his car. |
