For those of you from Virginia, I was wondering if you got your criminal records from the state using from SP 167.
http://www.vsp.state.va.us/CJIS_Criminal_Record_Check.shtm
Is this the correct form? Is there an easier way other than the federal FBI check (I don't have 4 months to wait for that one). Are there any other options that the Korean immigration office will accept?
Thanks in advance. I want to find out the quickest and simplest way to do this. |

Hey, I'm from Fairfax, and I contacted the embassy in Washington and they said that a local police station's background check is fine. You don't need the FBI one. In my case, for Fairfax, it's like $10 for the report and it's available in a week, as I recall.
No doubt someone will start flaming me now and say "I was required to get the FBI one." Well, sucks to be that person, but I know what the embassy in D.C. said. |

I did mine in Richmond on site at the headquarters for the state police dept.
Didn't need the FBI check either. It was pretty simple. The apostille can also be done in a day if you go to the secretary of commonwealth office downtown at the right time.
Supposedly the wait time for a Virginia CRC is around 2 weeks but I've not met anyone who has waited that long... |

That sounds great, but doesn't sound like something I can do from here in Korea. |

My police station says they can issue a report by mail if you just send copies of two IDs. |

Oh... sorry!
I did mine in VA. I told them that I'd actually made a trip home from Korea to get it done (and showed them my passport with the stamps). Technically it was kind of true.
Anyhow, if you're not in the state and can't drive into Richmond to request it in person then yes, you probably will need to wait awhile.
I think they're pretty efficient though. You shouldn't have any major problems having it taken care of while you're here in Korea.
Good luck! |

I'm in Hampton Roads and mine came back fine. A good way to track its progress is to use a check card and start checking for a charge from the VA State Police online about a week after you mail it. Basically, if they charge you, they've accepted your paperwork and are working on it. Took me about 2 weeks |

Yes, I did SP-167. I did it from Korea -- twice, in fact. It's a pain in the tuckus because you need your signature notarized (and my father requested the check and his signature needed to be notarized as well). It was accepted. Please note also that Immigration here and the Korean Embassy in DC are... well, they're kinda like the left and right hand and they're mutually ignorant of the other.
SP-167 works, and I think it took about 2 weeks for me. |
