Can anyone prove or disprove the following?
Does boiling water freeze faster/cold water boil faster?
Does wearing two pairs of socks actually make your feet colder because of the sweat factor?
This is causing a lot of friction in our teachers room - can anyone help. |

Your first question is a big no. Simple thermodynamics. I thought everyone did those how-much-energy-is-required-to-turn-ice-into-boiling-water equations in high school. Transition energies and such...
The second question is pretty stupid, but more difficult. If your feet don't sweat there's no problem. If they do sweat it largely depends on how much. Sweat (water) conducts and holds heat far more efficiently than socks or shoes, so if you soak your socks through then it's likely your feet will be colder. If you only form a small layer of sweat around your feet it's likely they'll be warmer because of the extra insulating layer. |
