How do you tell a boss that you don't want to renew the contraact for nextyear. I keep telling him, and he doesn't understadI want a different school. He also wn't give l;etter of release. Even though my contract ends in three weeks.
He wants me to stay for 2.1m, yet I want to go to the public school. They already offered me a job and I like the new location.
Any help would be great.
He is holding my degree and transcripts as well. He been holding them all year. Yet I need them to turn in to the new school. |

Well unless you worked illegally for the first few months, your visa should be up soon after you contract so you'll be free to pursue new employment.
If not, than you can get your own exit order, show it to immi on the way to Japan and come back on a tourist visa! Tada!!!!!
Just tell hime your leaving and you would appeciate a letter of release out of respect for your work done there. If not, just speak your mind. |

Tell him that you want 2.9 and you'll stay and keep at him for your transcripts every time you see him. |

Tell your boss that since he clearly doesn't want you to ever find another job, that you would be willing to sign a life-time employment contract, complete with yearly raises and partial ownership of the school.
Seriously. Draw up the paper work, complete with your salary after 20 years of yearly raises and what percentage of the hagwon you will want to own in 2028. Submit the document in all sincerity and tell him how happy you are that he finds you so talented that he can't imagine his school continuing without you. Also, tell him as a life time employee, you are going to require much nicer accomdation next year.
Please do this and post the results. I seriously wish I could see the look on his face.
The good news: Since your contract is finished in 3 weeks you don't need a letter of release...you aren't being released. Once your contract is up, you are a free agent and you certainly don't need his approval to get a new job.
The bad news: If he wants to be a *beep* and not release your documents there is no easy way to compel him to do so. He could always claim they are lost (and there is a pretty good chance that he'd be telling the truth). Start making alternative arrangements now and chalk it up as a lesson: Don't let your boss hold your diploma. You'd need a new set of transcripts anyway, as every job I've gotten here has asked for a sealed set of transcripts. |

if your contract is ending you don't need a letter of release: the employment period has finished for that contract. it would be a good idea to get a record of employment (basically states how long you've worked at your current school), with an employer stamp, so you can get a pay raise at a PS for having experience. they are legally obligated to give this to you if you ask.
as for transcripts, you'll probably need sealed transcripts anyway, so i would order more now. your degree you should never have let him keep for a year because there's a good chance he's lost it. i would tell him politely that you like his school but you want to move to <insert city name here> because your friend/gf/by lives there (something like that) and that you need your diploma back now. if he won't give it back to you, tell him that you will have to report it stolen because your uni won't issue you another. see if it magically appears then.
good luck, don't feel sorry for your boss, he sounds like a d1ckhead. and 2.1?!? doubt he'll find another teacher at that pay these days |

I would also like to see that. Incidentally I told my boss it was okay to frame my degree. This way I know where it is at all times. I see it every day on my way to first class and I know it's safe. My transcripts can go to hell for all I care since they cost 10$ to have printed and sent to wherever on earth I please. |

Some people say I don't need a letter of release. This is the reply I got from the public school when I asked if I needed one, if my contract ended.
3. Release Letter: Do I need one if my contract ends on December 12th and I start working at a later date?
According to Korean Immigration you do. Because instead of doing the visa run, teachers with previous Korean teaching experience need not leave the country to secure another E2 VISA. And since you should process the new E2 visa prior to the expiration fo your current visa in order to avoid visa violation for over staying/exiting the country- you should present to Immigration a release letter commensurating the actual release date or employment completion.
When I came to Korea, it was before the health and background check went into law. So to renew it I sent my background check to the public school what offered me the job.
I livce in the same building with my boss. Two floors are for teaching one is for living. He loves opening ALL the mail I get. So thats why I mailed it to the school itself.
I am just really bored with Gumi, and the fact he wants me to give up a plane ticket home, a one month vacation, 7 paid holidays and only get a 100,000 won increase.
The public school offered 2.3 as most other people havce offered me between 2.2-2.3.
I will get my transcripts and degrees. Somehow. Maybe I tell my school to mail them out to the new place. I can do that. If he keeps playing hard ball.
If I didnt need a letter of release, then I wouldn't care. I wouldn't even mind going to Japan for 2-3 days. My contract ends on a Friday. I could go to Japan over weekend. |

I can't imagine you'd need a release letter. Wouldn't a copy of your contract suffice?
You really should go talk to Immigration directly or at least call them and explain your situation. You may get some leniency or a slight grace period on your departure date. A month ago a friend of mine was able to extend two weeks no questions asked because his replacement was delayed in coming.
Your boss has no say in anything you do once your alien card expires. In fact, he is responsible in making sure you get safe passage out of the country on or before the alien card expiry date. If you don't leave the country before the card expires you will pay a fine and so will the boss. You will be detained at the airport until you can demonstrate that you can pay the relevant overstay fine. Two years ago I was held for about an hour at Incheon when changing jobs mid-contract because they couldn't find my exit order in the system.
Whatever you do at this point, don't let your director get his hands on any of your other documents FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER. Don't hand over your alien card or passport. Nor should you have your transcripts and diploma delivered to his address. You need new transcripts no matter what, but in the meantime just try to get your diploma back.
You might also get ready for a battle regarding your last pay and severance. |

My current contract is 2,000,000. He takes 100,000 for tax and 60,000 for health fees.
So I make 1,860,000 after taxes.
He showed me the pension money after 11 months he had 400,000 in there. My guess is that should be close to 1,000,000 though. |

He's pocketing money from your pension. You're correct in that you should have close to 1,000,000 won from his contributions near the end of your 12 months. As long as you have been contributing as well, then you should get around 1.8 million at the end of your contract. Check out the sticky on the job related forum on how to check your pension balance |

Gumi! I had a horrible first Korean job experience there several years ago. I hope you haven't got the same boss as I did. |

After 3 months here, he had me sign some paer saying he wa poor. Go home, or stay without a pension.
As for the 160,000 tx he charges. he says 5% is tax and 2.5% health care.
I do know he has 70 students at most ann t 110,000 a student.
He pays 2ath teachers 1.100,000 each 2,200,000
A aid 1,000,000 and 2 English tachers Korean 1,1,00,000
Total 5,600,000 + my salery what his wife pays 1/2 of. She works in public school and puts 1,000,000 every month. he pays me 1,860,000 a month
The online website said for 2,000,000 I should of been paying 32,000 in tax not 100,000. So 70,000 * 12 is 840,000 he held onto if that site is right. No way to prove it though.
I also think he had me paying his gas bill last December - Febuary. I mean if a house is 7-10 C ALL the time because if you turn the heat on and 3 hours later it doesn't go up or a red light flashes over and over. Its broken.
I live in same building as his school. 3rd floor house. 1st 2 school.
So how would I had a 60,000-80,000 a month gas bills. I ran AC all summer 18C and that was only 60,000 a month
Lets not forget he wanted me to pay the 40,000 for health care evual after I paid for all the health tax for 11 months. |

I have no time for bosses like that. If I have to deal with any kind of shuyster like that in this country, then I will make sure to get right in that boss's face. I will not accept to be ripped off by anyone. Heck, I've supported ex-pats going after cheating bosses. None of you should accept being doormats like that. How could you let your boss keep your diploma or what have you for a year? Didn't you work hard for that diploma? I wouldn't let anyone keep my diploma for a long time. Not on your life would I allow that. |

I asked for it back plenty of times. Honestly I more worried about him making copies of it or something. I could order a new one for 15 dollars through my school. But He seems to be doing many bad things. Only a few weeks to go.
Thank god.
I just want this transfer to go through right. Heck guess I got a Job through Epik, yet the recruiter can't even tell me school info or how to get there as a bus is needed. |

I think the 'letter of release' they are asking for is related to the process of getting the visa without leaving the country. Brain dead right now but it is diff from the type if u r quitting part way.
I went thru all this recently. Without it it will be difficult (imposs?) to get immi to let it go smoothly. |
