My first graders went out on a trip to the 'flower village' and apparentley it was a trip to help disabled kids - all well and good.

So this is their first day back and the lesson is to write a small essay about their time at the flower village. They told me about a video they were all made to watch about abortion (or 'killing baby') and I got to thinking 'what kind of place were they sent to?'

I asked my co-teacher about this flower village and she said it was run by nuns.

Does anyone know about this place? Have any of your students been sent there?

That just sounds messed up. Was the point of it saying, "Prevent autism, have an abortion" or "Save these kids by outlawing abortion?"

"Flower Village" is a very vague name, and could describe probably a hundred different places in Gyunggido alone.

Flower Village (꽃동네) is a place in the Chungbuk province that helps a load of different kinds of people with various disabilities. 300 or so nuns, 200 long-term helpers and approximately 1000 short-term (day) helpers help the place run. It's not shoddy, it's a nice place where a lot of kids see things, help out and learn a lot. Helped my snotty kids quiet down for a couple days afterward.

The abortion video is a really short one, but apparently it leaves a big impact.. But then again similar videos are shown to kids several times in their school years, including once or twice at school in their middle and high school years.

Yup, thats the one - call me sensitive but they should not be shoving religious doctrine down kids throats.

It left a impact on my students - they wrote things like 'the doctors and mothers who kill babies are evil and should die' call me sensitive but if a message is delivered in a way in which my students write those kind of statments then I would rather they didn't bother in the first place.

I agree aborition is a sensitive topic with two sides to the debate but I also think that there is huge grey areas within this topic that need to be discussed (like pregnancy through rape) and have been ignored. I'm not impressed.

It looks that way RT. I thought it was a straightforward 3 days helping out disabled kids but it looks like some christian outfit trying to spread their doctrine to the youth of Korea.

I was born and raised Roman Catholic - I wathced probably the same video at my RC school at the age of 15 and was not impressed. Nor did it stop teenage pregnancy/abortion around my way. Confused
