This is in response to the question you asked me last week: �Why not hangukmal?"

There are several reasons:

The first reason:
제1의 이유:
In order to learn English, you must think in English.
영어를 배우도록 영어로 생각해야 합니다.

When you speak in Korean, you can't think in English.
한국말 할 때 영어로 생각할 수 없습니다.
When you say "고양이,� you can't think about "cat."
여러분이 �고양이�라고 말할 때 �cat"이라고 생각 할 수 없습니다.
So I don't want you to say "고양이.�
그래서 저는 여러분이 �고양이�라고 말하지 않자고 묻합니다.

The second reason:
제2의 이유:
When you speak English, you are helping other students learn English.
영어로 말 할 때 나머지 학생을 영어를 배우는 것을 도와줍니다.

In my high school French class, one of my classmates used the word amusant, which meant "funny."
제 고등 프랑스어 수업에 제 학교 친구 중에 한 명이 �웃기는� 듯이는 amusant이라는 낱말을 했습니다.
That's how I learned that word.
저는 그렇게 그 낱말을 배웠습니다.

The third reason:
제3의 이유:
One learns from listening in a second language.
어니 외국어를 듣고 배웁니다.

In the public school in Hongcheon, there is a foreign teacher who often says,
"Wow! Excellent!"
홍천에 학교에 자주 "Wow! Excellent!"라고 말하는 외국선생님입니다.
The students imitate him.
아이들이 그를 모방합니다.

The fourth reason:
제4의 이유:
When you practice a second language, you are finding out what important words you need to know.
외국어를 연습할 때 무슨 중요하는 낱말을 배우야 하는지 조사합니다.

Yesterday, I gave a pizza party to the 6:30 class.
저는 어베6시30분 다니는 학급에게 피자 파티를 여렸습니다.
When the pizzaman came, I tried to say,
"These students don't speak Korean in class, so I am rewarding them."
피자를 배달하는 사람이 올 때 저는
�저는 이 학생들이 수업에서 한국할 하지 않다고 상을 주고 있습니다�라고
말하도록 했습니다.
But at that moment, I realized that didn't know how to say "reward" in Korean.
그렇지만 저는 그 때 자신이 한국말로 "reward"이라고 말할 줄 몰랐습니다.

The fifth reason:
제5의 이유:
If your class stops hangukmalling, I might throw a pizza party for you,
like I did the 6:30 class.
여러분도 한국말하지 말면 저는 아마 6시30분 다니는 수업처럼 피자 파티를 열리겠습니다.

Now you might have a few questions:
이제 여러 질문 있습니다.

�Don't we have to speak Korean in order to understand English class?�
�우리는 영어 수업을 이해하도록 한국말 해야 안 합니까?�

My Japanese teacher speaks to the class when it is not necessary.
제 일본어 선생님이 자주 학급에게 필요가 없이 한국말 합니다.
In the last class, we looked at a picture of a cat in the book.
우리는 지난 수업에 교본에 고양이의 그림을 봤습니다.
The book said, "ねこ　です＂　which means, "This is a cat."
교본은 �고양이입니다�라는 �네코 데스�라고 했습니다.
Because of the picture, we could have easily known what "ねこ　です� meant,
but the teacher said "고양이입니다� anyway.
그림 대문에 우리는 쉽게 �ねこ　です�라는 것을 이해할 수 있었지만
선생님은 �고양이입니다�라고 했습니다.

�When I speak English, what if I run into a word I don't know?�
�저는 영어로 말할 때 모르는 낱말을 나면 어떻게 되지?�

I carry an electronic dictionary everywhere.
저는 늘 전자사전을 가집니다.
I will loan it to you.
빌리 주겠습니다.

"But the other students are Korean.
Can Koreans speak English to each other?"
�그러나 나머지 학생이 한국인이지요.
한국사람은 서러 영어로 말할 수 있습니까?�

The best foreign language class I've ever seen was my high school French class.
저는 생활에 본 외국어 수업 중에 가장 홓은 수업이 우리 고등 프랑스어 수업이었습니다.

The teacher did not let us speak English in class.
선생님이 우리에게 수업에 영어로 못 말하게 말렸습니다.
Consequently, we got into the habit of speaking French.
그래서 우리는 프랑스어로 말하는 버릇이 생겼습니다.
We spoke French to each other in the other classes.
우리는 나머지 수업에서 서로 프랑스어로 이야기 했습니다
We spoke French in the cafeteria.
우리는 식당에서 프랑스어로 이야기 했습니다.
We spoke French in the locker room.
우리는 탈의실에서 프랑스어로 이야기 했습니다.
We borrowed pencils in French.
우리는 프랑스어로 연필을 비렸습니다.
We insulted each other in French.
우리는 프랑스어로 서로 모욕했습니다.
We made fun of the teachers in French.
우리는 프랑스어로 선생님들을 놀렸습니다.
Consequently, we learned French.
우리는 그렇게 프랑스어를 잘 배웠습니다.
The following year, our French teacher was a real nerd.
다음 년 우리 프랑스어 선생님이 멋없었습니다.
I won't talk about her.
저는 그녀를 못 말하겠습니다.

Judging by your subject, I thought you were asking why hanguk-mal is spoken with the hard 'k' sound dropped, as Koreans do when saying other words like 16 (shee-nyook) and 설날 which comes out as sollal. Darn.

All of the points made are valid and important for someone who is learning Korean...but what is the point of this madness? And how does it all proceed from the original question? I guess I missed something?

I think I know where the OP is coming from but there are quite a few errors in the Korean.

That's all the more reason why I need more Korean practice.

That strengthens my position that a foreign language student needs foreign language practice.
And that seems to be a radical position here in Korea.

Sure, I have also made mistakes in Korean when posting here a few years ago. Improve via one-to-one tuition - and then you will increase your chances of meeting Koreans who are happy to speak in Korean.

It's very commendable. Learning Korean (at an advanced level) is hard not just because of the language itself but the attitudes of Koreans (who really, really want you to use English) about using Korean instead of English. I've always heard you on that, Tomato. It's always English first in people's minds. But, that's the nature of our work and environment. Go outside to mainstreamville and Korean can be used freely. Albeit not necessarily academically. Racey all the same.

When finishing with plain form 되다 add the extra 어 to the ㅣ giving 돼.
안되요 / 안돼.

When contracting with ㅣ add the ㅕ, 빌려 주세요.

The hard part for me with Korean is remembering similar words, also spelling.
I don't know how to spell it (without looking it up) but French I learned is 불어 rather than 프랑스어. I guess this could be a reflection of the new generation?

I would say your writing skills are excellent. How are you speaking skills? I think, perhaps, that if you could actually say something like you wrote you would, and you wouldn't need your 'English only' high horse. You are correct that 'English only' has been, historically, the most effective way of teaching English, but it was almost always accompanied by a physical beating for non-compliance. We are living in a different time and place, and we need to use a little finesse. 'English only' is not only virtually impossible, it is 'poor method' in this time and place.

They complained because the native teachers won't speak English OUTSIDE of class?
That's nothing, here in Korea, the native teachers won't even speak English IN class!

Are there other foreign teachers at your school?
