It's like that Monty Python skit where the guy has seen "almost one" sasquatch, or whatever it was. |

The ESL industry in Korea needs some serious overhaul before it will be effective.
It mostly is a money grabbing Industry, that plays on peoples insecurities regarding the future of their children.
The other problem is that parents are not sufficiently critical and/or are blindsided by the ESL industry.
I am pretty sure it will take another generation before any change will kick in. |

Not to understate the number of money grabbing, just looking to make a won hagwons out there. However, one problem with the education system in Korea that is not given enough attention is that the parents like it the way it is!
They don't want the public schools to improve.
They don't want the bad hagwons to go away.
They want a system that is translucent at best and a mine field of mediocrity and inequality.
Why?
They feel that the system being this way will give them the opportunity to run an end around on the other kids. If the public schools don't give all that their kids need to get ahead better for my kid. If there are a lot of substandard hagwons that don't really care about making up the short comings of the public school system, all the better. Anything to get my kid ahead.
The system isn't going to change anytime soon, because when it comes right down to it the majority of the parents in Korea think that it works to their advantage. |

I have several Korean friends who have told me this exact same thing. And, one of them actually owns a hagwon. |
