Well, our univ. offers us a nice (and very extensive) health exam every two years. They contract with a private medical outfit that has three locations around Seoul.

It took 4 freakin' hours!

I got to enjoy an Endoscopy while awake (had to be under 80kgs to get anesthetic). I also did pee test, gave 'em my best stool sample, filled 3 vials of blood, had various body organs ultra-sounded, hearing tests, eye tests, body fat index, heart scans, had an MRI done on my mid-section, and the list goes on.

My throat hurts from having that camera shoved down my throat!

It's one of those things where they are paying for it, and it's a good idea to have it done... but.... it ain't no fun!

Hi bass,

Not sure what they did that, I have had 2 endoscopes in the past 18 months and both times I was given something to put me to sleep. And trust me, I am heavier than 80kgs. I can't imagine doing that and being awake. I woke up during BOTH of mine because I wasn't given enough medicine.

I believe this is done because of the high rate of stomach ulcers and cancers here in Korea.
Underlying causes: communal style eating habits, stress, soju, and possibly too much kimchi. Not joking about that last, high acidity and too much salt in combination with stress and living style.

Hence the Heliobacter Project Will ads on t.v.

Have a look here,

and here,

When I had my last physical, I 'denied' the endoscopy as we are not a high risk group for this ailment. Maybe in a few years!

I look three times when I cross the road though. That's my endoscopy.

I like your posts, but what you experienced today is that same as any local employee at your university. Are you saying this was a good experience or a bad experience?

You're lucky they picked that point of entry. If you're over 35, you really need to start getting regular colonoscopies. I used to put that age at 30. Then I turned 30.

What he experienced was a company-provided, voluntary, routine medical exam. Something more American companies need to offer.

hahahahah I had that done with the endoscopy, I thought the hell with it might as well have one going up and down while I am here..

I was put under for both, but as I told the doctors I need more drugs than the usual guys as I had a pretty full on 20's Twisted Evil

so for my colonoscopy I woke up 5 mins into and started to look at the monitor then I started a conversation for the doc! he was shocked I was awake, asked how I felt, I replied Ive had better days! he then gave me a guided tour of my mid body..

second was the endoscopy, I was waiting in line for my turn and all I heard was this guy gagging and gagging, the doc asked if I wanted to do it awake.. I said NO! but I will need more drugs than the last guy got!
he replied.. dont worry we know what to do, I said! NO! I know my body
I need double dose to knock me out.. he being korean and all, said dont worry..
so he injected me and started to count from 100 backwards, the nurse and him kept telling me I would be out by 95! well I was still telling him at 90! I needed more, 85!
he is amazed and told the nurse to give me more..
then I was out! but I woke up half way through it.. hahahhaah

Very true! I just started taking Nexium to treat possible H. Pylori bacteria. Eating in Korea is just not healthy. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000229.htm

Oh, don't get me wrong -- not complaining. I knew what I was in for, and actually had a choice of doing that or drinking barium liquid again and having x-rays of my intestines. I had done that 2 years ago, so thought I'd better go for the Endoscopy.

These health checks rock -- hate doing them, but they are FAR better than the lack of care (due to HMO's) I'd receive in the USA! I knew it would be downright awful to do the endoscopy. My coworker had just finished it before me, and she warned me about how terrible it was.

Yeah, I am due for a colon check, but they apparently don't do that there, and I don't even know where to go for one. I actually thought one of the tests was going to be that, because they kept pointing to that area, but it turned out to be an MRI of my lower abdomen area. Would that show the same thing, anyway?

Endoscopy hell is when they want to look at your kidneys. I paid for all of my sins right there.
