We are in the midst of negotiations right now, and my school has an old copy of the pay scale - with qualifications required for each stage. If someone can list the new one here it would be wonderful, or print a link to it. Thanks so much.

Thank you very much for the information. As I said my school, nor I had the latest scale, but both parties were wondering why on the GEPIK website it says that teachers are started at salaries ranging from 1.6 to 2.7. We were wondering how a teacher got above 2.3. Anyways, thank you for the info.

I believe the 1.6-2.7 is an EPIK payscale, (with 1.6 being the 2 year guys).

With GEPIK its possible to get up to 2.6
If a level 1 renews at the same school s/he may recieve a 100,000won increase, to level 1+ status. You may recieve 2 such increases bringing your total to 2.5. Add in the rural bonus and you are at 2.6

And if you do overtime, you get paid more. I got a letter of reference from a school I worked at in Japan for 4 years. It only brought it up 100,000 won, but the overtime I am doing brings it up 300,000 more. See if the school you are interested in is willing to do one or both in your situation.

So it's a benefit to have teacher certification in your home country?

Yes, I was asked by the public school I work at now if I had one. However, as I mentioned, I worked 4 years in Japan, and they didn't care if it was 1 or 100. You probably won't be able to get 200,000, the recruiter actually wanted me to sign a contract with a lower salary when I asked about this LOL

When I got into work this morning I found out that the director had called GEPIK to find out why on its website it says that teachers can start at 2.7. He said that GEPIK said it was a mistype. He said that GEPIK further went on to explain to him that they initially were going to put that there, and raise the salaries to compete with SMOE and EPIK, but decided that since GEPIK covers a more desirable area than the other two that they decided they didn't have to match the other's salaries.

Since when is Gyeonggido more desirable than Seoul? There are a few nice areas in Gyeonggi, but there are also some places out in the sticks that I would never want to go to

Exactly, GEPIK can compete with EPIK for the most part, but the biggest selling point of GEPIK/Gyeonggi is it's proximity to Seoul.

Seriously, how many newbies actually wanted to be in Ansan/Hwaseong/Suwon/Pyeongtaek/etc from the outset. More often than not, it's a case of recruiters pawning off less desirable positions saying that "Seoul is full" or in the case of public schools, missing the sept/mar start SMOE and then taking GEPIK as a second choice.

This is exactly how I told him foreigners think, and why it is important to "sweeten" the school package they are offering, if they want to keep quality teachers especially.

I heard from my VP that GEPIK may increase their payscale because of the decreased valued in the won. We'll have to wait and see the new contract for 2009 though
