|
|
My friend is planning to teach in Korea, but he recently had a heart attack.
Fortunately, he made it to the hospital in time. They put in a few stents and he has to take meds.
Will his heart attack affect his ability to get an E-2 visa?
Does he have to disclose his condition?
Thanks

Not trying to discourage him coming here, but for his own sake he should speak to his gp and ask if a lot of stress could induce another. It is no easy ride teaching in Korea man. |

Yes. He is obliged to tell about this incident in his health declaration.
And yes he will be refused an E-2 visa. |

I think people have this illusion of Korea being this low stress place to teach.
Korea for me was way more stressful than working or teaching in the US.
Also having lived in Vietnam I would say everyday life in Korea was way more stressful than the US or Vietnam combined for 2 main reasons:
1st: You are a visa slave to your employer. They have the ability to make
your life miserable.
2nd: The endless paperwork
Also should he need medical attention in Korea they could easily detect his stents and thus know he lied on his medical check list.
Take my advice and check out ESL anywhere but Korea.

Not necessarily.
Being outside and trying to get in, won't be the easiest - SCHOOLS will be wary of it. BUT, having medical issues won't preclude getting an E2.
Teacher at a school near mine had a heart attack IN Korea. Not only did he keep the job, but he was renewed the next year.
The key to the whole situation is severity. If it's a quadruple bypass, I-saw-the-light kind of thing, probably not. But a couple of stints, taking care of the risk factors, etc, there is a decent chance he'll be able to find something. |
