Just got an email about this on facebook. Apparently the lease owners are going back on their word, and the guys running the joint are refusing to back down.
I hate to speculate, but I would guess that based on the tremendous success of the bar, the owners tried to up their rent or some other BS like that. That place was a PS2 방 before, if I remember correctly. Again, pure speculation, but that wouldn't surprise me.
Whatever the case, instead of staying open for business, they're shutting down the best new bar in Korea until the dust settles. I hope these guys can hold their ground and get back up and running soon. |

Yep, that's exactly what I think. The bar makes money so the landlords think they can jack up the rent. Happens in Korea all the time.
I'm not sure how the contract went down, but I'd think the managers would've braced for this. If they end up pulling out, man, all that interior decoration and promotions all go down the drain. |

Hi guys,
We are indeed having a dispute over the lease. It's a little more complicated than increased rent, but that is part of the bigger picture. The lease holder is making it impossible for us to continue running the bar in a successful fashion, so instead of having a big headache, we've decided to fight. Right now the landlord is trying to buy out the lease so we can step in and sign directly with him. If that doesn't work, we are going to enlist the help of the foreign community and hopefully send a powerful message.
If all else fails, we will be moving to a new location in Sinchon. We will keep you posted on all happenings leading up to whatever the final solution is.
If you don't hear from us that The King's Tap is open, don't go. They may try to open the doors behind our backs, without compensating us for all the money we have already invested. As someone else posted, yes, this has happened to foreigners trying to run bars in the past. The best we can do is stick together to show these Korean business men that they can't push us around and they sure as hell can't run a successful foreign bar by scewing over and alienating foreigners.
Cheers and we'll be in touch,
Matt and Dave, The King's Tap |

I see why they are shutting you down. The OP and 'thekingstap' are so thick headed that nobody is willing to tell the location of the place. You must not care or think there is any chance of re-opening. It's that or you aren't very wise. A wise businessperson would tell the location of the place not simply mention where you might go next. |

I hope if they do this one of you stands out front on Fridays and Saturdays for a while to let people know what is going on. I know a Korean whose success in the bar business also gave him some headaches with a greedy landlord. He decided to pay the additional rent for now.
Good luck to you guys. |
