Basically wifey wants one of these for Christmas.
I have no clue what I should be looking for in terms of functions, size, price etc. I know they are for GPS but they all have other stuff like TV (!!!) and games and all sorts of stuff.
Any one have one of these and could possible shed some light on these things?
Thanks! |

I've owned 2. What would you like to know?
What's your budget?
A popular model is INAVI. There is a very small/inexpensive model called the UZ/PNS that also works off of an internal battery for 2 or 3 hours. If you just need to get around town, that might be good for you. It can be had for as low as 220,000 or so.

If you want to spend more, look into the INAVI GS+ model, or the K7 model. Those should have a TV inside. Go to technomart at Gangbyeon on the green line, or Yongsan station's mall. You can see/try many there.

I-river seemed to have a fairly decent model before, too. |

From the subtle hints she has dropped she wants:
TV
GPS map
touch screen
music player
movie player (I guess from a usb/sd card)
radio
I can spend about 300,000 (poss more if I can get a good one)
How do you upgrade the maps? Korean roads are always being built/wrecked/changed/disguised so will the GPS thingy update itself or do you need to download some more stuff?
Cheers! |

Well, the Inavi's update by downloading onto your SD card from their website. You have to make an ID and sign up using a code sold with your unit. It will have an ID card inside of the box. Also, you need to have your name entered into the national online registry or whatever. Much easier to use a Korean for this, if your wife is Korean. Maps are updated every 3 months, if memory serves.
I have the Inavi G1, and I haven't been too thrilled with it due to chip speed. It's also slow with movie files, so test whatever model you decide on with movie files if you can. Half of a movie takes 15 seconds or more to load and play sometimes. Maybe the ES100 is similiar, but I haven't tried it. They came out about the same time. Bring some on an SD chip and see how long they take to load on different models. I'd make sure the CPU on the unit is 700mhz minimum!
The Inavi G1+ improves on speed, and maps, and would do everything you're looking for. Not sure if movie load times are much better. I also like having one with buttons on it for HOME and simple stuff. I've had both, and dislike the touchscreen-only models. Just give me some friggin' buttons to make it easier, please!
There used to be a model from I-River last year which loaded files really fast, but I don't know if they stopped making GPS's or if they are mildly successful. I have no idea about their map updating procedures. |
