That is just sad. You could flip burgers in the US. Take that money, convert it to won, and you'd be making more than we make. |

Ah, but do they get free housing or a housing allowance? If you could even FIND an apartment for $400 a month you'd be shelling out $4,800 of that income. |

Isn't shift manager like the jack of all trades of McDonalds?
Flipping, frying, cash registering, taking orders, mopping/sweeping.... have I forget anything else? |

No, but they don't have to live in the US either. |

I did a little research, and shift managers make about $18,000 which is $1,500 a month. Doing the conversion at current rates, that comes out to about 2.2 mill in Korean won. I can't imagine trying to make ends meet on that little money in the States since I WOULD have to pay for my own housing. |

Here's the rub. You can't find an apartment for less than, oh, say, $500US per month. Auto insurance and the note itself...well, there's another, say, $400. Untold bucks for utilities and such. The point has been made here many times before. Good savings, when you consider the benefits.
(Benefits being nasty Hagwon owner, manager, students, parents, ajummas sniping at you every chance they get, colored bags for your garbage, xenophobic douchebags hatin', not turning on the heat motherfuckers.)
Weigh out your lot, folks, and may ye be happy. |

Time to go back to the job you left behind before coming on over to South Korea, Einsteins. |

Um, hate to say this cause it makes it sound even worse, but your chances of getting the "shift manager" job at McDonald's is not even a guarantee, considering they may want you to "work your way up" first. While I understand not a lot of Americans pay a whole lot of respect to McJobs, that doesn't mean that everyone gets to start out as the boss when they apply to their local McJobs. |

You have to put in the time as the oilboy or toliet girl before you get the McDonalds tie and jacket... |

Bingo, before coming here I applied to a bunch of these positions since I ran my own business in college.
They're not desperate and the ones who did have the position seemed to work their way up, not walk in with a liberal arts degree. |

Why would you have an apartment when you could just live/work from home!
I just think we should put our profession into perspective.
1. We have to live in a very foreiner-UNfriendly environment.
2. We longer enjoy the same Qualify of Life we enjoyed back home. (limited choice in food, services, etc...)
3. Friends and Family are very far away. How many weddings, births, and birthdays have we missed?
We do all of these things to get a small one-room apartment that a McDonald's shift manager doesn't get.
I don't mean to put down the profession of a McDonald's manager. You can insert any full time shift manager retail job here that doesn't require a college degree.

Some of these little kids make it worth it being out here. Much more satisfying than yelling at high schoolers or working ungodly hours as the manager of McDonalds. I wouldnt trade this life for the same paying job back home. |

Pkang, your registration says March 2007. What you describe is a first-year situation. After a year, you should be in a job that will allow you to live in something bigger than a box. And you sure as hell shouldn't be making less than a McD's manager, even with the shitty exchange rate. Even for a first year job, 2.2 is shit; it's downright shameful for anyone to be making that little after their first year. |
