So I went into to work today, and my boss gave me some papers to fill out. She said that they would be for a Korean criminal record check. I should probably add that I just extended my visa for another year. After some probing I was also told that it had something to do with the fact that I have moved buildings (but still work at the same company), but in she basically fed me a few random lines, and then quickly changed the subject. When I told her that I had never heard of this before she just acted like it was no big deal.

So here are the issues that I have with this whole thing.

1. I just renewed my visa. To me that means that I have met all of the immigration requirements. I mean why else would they have processed my papers work? My visa was renewed, not renewed pending this Korean criminal record check, just renwed period.

2. As far as I can see, moving buildings and criminal record checks have nothing to do with each other.

3. Foreigners on E-2 visas who get in trouble with the law (and convicted) are deported, or serve their sentence and then deorted. It doesn't even make sense that I could have a criminal record in Korea and still be here.

4. None of the other employees at my academy knew what I was talking about.

I don't know what's going on, but things do not add up to me. I stopped short of calling B.S. because, well, I didn't know what was going on, and Korea is such a fluid place that who knows what rules and regulations have come up. This might not be a big deal, they may even be on the up and up, however if pressed I'd have to say that I am not being told everything.

It has nothing to do with immigration.

It may be an employer policy.
It has been an "office of education policy" in some districts for a while now.

They are just following the same rules that Korean teachers are SUPPOSED to follow.

It costs you nothing, so why worry about it.

I had to do that too.. supposedly required by the local police for foreign teachers... I was quickly informed that the Korean teachers have no such check on THEIR criminal behavior.

Yeah, funny, I would have passed the CRC in both my home countries but not here. Doesn't matter now anyway, I'm outskis!
