I'm wondering if it's possible to find a job at a uni for only 6 months. I'm sure going through recruiters is possible when asking. Has anyone here been able to find 6 month work outside of hakwons?
About to leave my Chinese hakwon, and really don't want to do that kind of teaching again. Also, has anyone here worked at both Chinese style hakwons (training centers) and their real Korean counterparts? Which is worse? Any comparisons? |

Why do you only want 6 months? Got other plans 6 months from now? |

You COULD always sign a 1-yr contract and leave during the (1st/2nd)semester vacation break. I did it. According to contract stipulations. Having said that, they weren't interested in hiring me back at a later time, even though I went back home because my mom was being treated for breast cancer. I heard from an office mate and another former co-worker that the head-(dick)honcho wasn't interested in hiring me back due to the fact that I broke that contract early. So be it. Just be aware that you may not get a great reference from a place from which you leave early. |

Uni jobs are bit harder to get, unless you're open to working at a unikwon (university-hogwon) but those places are usually not so great. Most decent universities know won't hire you for a 6 month gig unless they are specifically hiring for a temp position but in that case they'd most likely just give the classes to a teacher who's already there or hire an F visa holder.
Is it possible? Sure. Anything is possible. It's not standard though so you'll need to negotiate to get a 6 month contract. What do you have to offer that most applicants don't have? What are you willing to do for that shortened contract? If you elaborate, others here on the forum might be able to give you a more accurate assessment.
Aside from hogwon work, what kinds of jobs are you willing to do? What are you qualified to do or have experience doing? Would you do manual labor, for example? |

I haven't really considered that other work may even be possible. I've spent plenty of time on other sites looking for jobs to do abroad. But yes, I can do manual labor, photographer, writer, parkour instructor (sports and fitness as well) - I'm really a well rounded individual.
I never really thought that those skills would help land a teaching job, or to be able to find any other kind of job on a teachers forum. But yeah, I can see how it would def. help to mention such things now.
Just up and leaving could be an option, but maybe I'd want to return and work again sometime in order to save up to my goal of $$$.
Thanks or the info. though! Perhaps negotiating is the best option. |

You haven't really mentioned any skills or qualifications that would help you land a uni job teaching English (or even ones which would give you an advantage with a regular ELT job in Korea). The main qualifications that would make you more attractive (and give you leverage for negotiation at a uni) are: teaching certificate (but most people have one these days), degree (particularly an MA) in TESOL, previous university ELT experience, you've published a well known book on ELT or at least test taking, you're a celebrity in the ELT field (particularly if you've been on TV here), you are a certified examiner for a popular exam (TOEFL, IELTS). If you decide to look also at hogwons then another negotiating point is that you'll accept a lower salary or forego the flight and/or accommodations. Unis probably won't care about those things so they're not a potential negotiating point.
Those other things (photography, writing, sports) will only open the door to jobs in THOSE fields, but for most of those you'll need to speak Korean. If you're willing to do manual labor you might get a job on the outskirts of Seoul which wouldn't require you to speak Korean. There is always 3D work for foreigners. In general, the pay isn't as good as what the average teaching job pays.
But why do you want only a 6 month job? If your goal is to save up money then how are you going to save more with a 6 month job than with a 12 month job?
Another question, do you have the qualifications and contacts to even GET a uni job? If so, do you also have what it takes to compete against everyone else who wants one? |

Hmm I didn't realize the competition was so stiff. I don't have enough experience as a teacher to work in a Uni.
I prefer 6 months to a year for reasons of being away from my significant other. Even 6 months at a time is difficult.
I know I'll be going to a hagwon then.
I learn language super easy, it's my special skill. Plus I've taught for many years around the world - from Mexico to the Philippines. Sports...but instructing none the less. |
