I was in Itaewon last night, and I discovered - to my dismay - that Ape with Pipe has closed down, replaced by some fusion restaurant. Now, the food at AwP had been kind of mediocre lately - they took their quiche off the menu, and the trend seemed increasingly fusion. Still, I LOVED their desserts, especially their chocolate lava cake.
Which brings me to my question: where in Seoul can you find a really good dessert? I've had the stuff at the chains (Outback, Bennigan's, Fridays) and I don't like it. I enjoy the apple tart at La Cigale in Itaewon, but it's not a very good environment for a late dessert.
Nine times out of ten my wife and I either skip dessert, or else we have an ice cream or a slice of Costco pie. But sometimes we're in the mood for something more sophisticated or sumptuous. Any suggestions? |

Have you tried the hotel restaurants? Dessert and coffee for two, they'd probably be amenable... as long as it's not too late and they're not crowded. Hotel lobby lounges typically have a selection of desserts, but pickings are slim.
Of course, any of the Starbucks-type big coffee shop+bakery chains.
I wonder if any of the wine bars would do, say, a nice tawny port and a slice of dark chocolate cake. Or chocolate cake soaked in a ruby port. mmm.
If you're in the Jongno/Gwanghwamoon area, you might try Wine & Brick. Dessert alone, you'd likely have to sit on the bakery side, but if you're having wine or coffee as well, get a table on the dining side.
I fear none of these options is sophisticated enough to satisfy the most discriminating palate. Still, they're snazzier than munching on a slab of Costco pie at Home, Sweet Concrete Box.

try Apkeujeong area
if you are facing Hyndai Dept Store across the street
walk left.
keep walking
first bakery, maybe Paris C?? - very very nice - they have wonderful delights there and chairs too, nice ambience, good place for lunch
keep walking some more, past 2 lights (?maybe). there is a very expensive coffee shop on that street - super special desserts - you might pass it so keep a look out
also if you walk the street that runs parallel to the one you are walking (the main one) there are several bistros/dessert shops. very popular
enjoy! |
