So I have 5 days off coming up after Christmas and I was thinking about taking a train all along the east, stopping for the night in whatever small town might have a hotel.
I was told there is a train that travels the east side of Korea, but I don't know where to get more information about it. Anybody know? |

ah thanks so much! What are the prices like? I take it if I'm going to be traveling for 4 days it'd be cheaper to get the KR Pass. i can't check prices on the web site for some reason.
I might have to take you up on your suggestion (especially since I'm in Daejeon) and get down to Mokpo then shoot over to Yeosu.
Do I have to worry about reservations? Are they usually that crowded? |

Never made reservations online, so not sure what's up with the site. Maybe the Korean site works better? Since most Koreans will only have Christmas Day and New Year's Day off, as long as it's not the weekend, you probably won't even need reservations, although it is vacation time for students.
As for prices, they're pretty cheap, as long as you don't take the KTX. I've never purchased the Korea Rail Pass, but I'm sure you could wiki or google info on that and see what suits you better. |

Going north from Busan, the tracks move more towards the northwest after about Kyoung-Ju and head toward Seoul. I think there is a spur that runs up to one of the east coast cities, but there isn't a track that parallels route 7 from Sokcho to Ulsan. You'll have to take a bus for the east coast run. I've done it on the bus, and it's good. |

Try it in Internet Explorer. I had no problems buying a ticket last night from Ulsan to Bujeon Station. |

| The rails come inland from the coast, but it does run all the way up to Gangneung, which is just an hour or so south of Sokcho on the coast. Prices are on korail.com |

thanks for the help!
It seems not going KTX is a bit of a problem, as Daejeon seems to only lead out via KTX.... at least that's what it looks like on the maps. I wanted to get to Mokpo but looking into Yeosu I might have plenty to explore out there. Depending on wether I can finegle my friendship with a boater =) we shall see, i will report back.
Thanks again for the help. I think I'll just show up at the station and hope for the best. God always seems to provide best that way =)
Merry Christmas! |

Best to take a bus from Dong Seoul at Gangbyeon station where Technomart is. About 17,000 won to Gangneung in 3.5 hours.
Motels are out there in most towns, but best speak some Korean as they won't know what you're talking about when you say you need a room for the night.
There are trains everywhere, but you'll be waiting around a lot and going slower. |
