You guys serious ? They actually dont even pay you ? Comon I expect a bit of skullduggery but not paying people - that sounds unlikely even for Korea, but if you guys work there and thats what happens then thanks for the warning !!!!!! |

Usually about 30-40% of the people who work at them don't get paid.
The boss disappears over the horizon the day before you get paid (last day of camp). This is especially true when people work camps without a work visa (C4) or outside of their E2 (without the blessing of immigration).
Another 50% get seriously ripped off on wages (how does a 27% tax bracket sound for starters). Then they add in the other deductions and you get what's left (less than 1/2 of what you were expecting).
10-20% come away happy or at least not feeling too badly ripped off (usually the ones with a C4 or immigration approval on their E2).

Jesus Christ
Are working conditions generally this bad in Korea ?
Are there no reputable firms for doing winter camps ? Would I be wrong in thinking government run camps would be more reliable ?
I guess the old adage is true - if it looks to good to be true it probably is ! I was looking at Korea as a kind of disneyland for ESL teachers ..... I'm wrong arent I ? |

Once a uni camp run by a hakwon tried to lock up English monkeys in the campus cage for the duration of the camp. Fortunately, all English monkeys escaped. |

I can vouch for the one camp I worked at years ago.. Camp Korea, or CK. I know they have a flight option which I took at the time - they just deducted 1Mil from my pay. The return flight was an open ticket good for 1 year.
I still see job postings for them every season and they always have a few returnees, as returnees get incremental bonuses for the number of times they return. No problems with pay, no 27% tax.
If you can't find the job ads, PM me and I can put you in touch with the recruiting manager. |

a couple years ago, a friend came to Korea for a 1 or 2 month camp at an English Village. airfare was included, the pay was more than I was earning and the hours were less. plus there were a lot of foreign english teachers at the camp to "spend time with".
I don't think you'll have any problems getting paid from a government run English Village camp. Just stay away from the mom and pop hagwon camps. |
