Do you have money taken out of your pay each month for health insurance? If so, How much? I want to see if my school tries to dick me on pay. I get my first payment this week. |

If memory serves, it is about 2.5% of your salary. You pay for a full month 1st-30th, regardless of when you started. That is the health insurance policy not the school. You can't get your health insurance until you get your ARC, although, you will/should be covered from the moment you get into the country on an E2 visa. You should have received a health card. |

I have no health card. Should I be disturbed by this? Where can I get extensive info on the total cost? I would like to add it to my budget page. If the won keeps tanking, my savings goal will go completely down the tubes and I will walk. I am finding out quit quickly about all the "hidden" fees. |

You should be concerned if you gave a photocopy of your ARC to your school so that they could apply for your insurance. Sometimes it takes about 5-6 weeks to get the card. It takes time to get your ARC, then they need to apply for the insurance.
This is the website for the national health insurance plan.

There shouldn't be much in the way of hidden fees.
Legally, your employer is only allowed (without your permission) to deduct:
Tax (approximately 1.7% on an average teachers salary). http://www.nts.go.kr
Pension (about 4.5%) http://www.nps.or.kr/
Medical (2.54%) http://www.nhic.or.kr/
Click the links at the top of the home pages to go to the English pages on the websites.
Fees that you may not have been aware of because we don't have them at home may include:
apartment "maintenance fees" (a utility fee like gas or electric)
teachers association (if you are in a PS - about 10k per month)
lunch fee (if you are in a PS and you eat the provided lunch).
In regards to your health card... YOU CANNOT get it until you get your ARC.
You should get it about 2 weeks AFTER you get your ARC.
no booklet = no coverage (and means your employer is a crook). It also means that he did probably did not enroll you in the pension plan either.
