I woke up to the news of a possible failure of Citi group. I happen to owe Citi a substantial amount in student loans. My question is this: if a bank fails, not taken over but goes completely belly up, do my loans disapear with them like their debt does. That would be fantastic news for me. Anyone know?

Laughing a bankrupt bank would sell off its assets to pay off debts of which loans are its accounts receivable

So I would still owe money just to a different bank. The little guy never wins!

I think it's terrible that the government will print mountains of cash for greedy bankers but not for the average Joe.

Maybe you should tell your bank that you are a banker too and you just went belly up.

Maybe you can take advantage of the transfer of assets to the new bank and just say to the new one, "Hey, I paid everything off. I don't know why your records indicate otherwise."

Interject some confusion into the carnage. I like it.

As mentioned earlier, they'd sell your debt to someone else.

I owe Citibank an arm, leg, and both *beep*. The thing with my loans is that they are subsidized, which means if I don't pay them the government will come after me, not Citibank.

I'm wondering if this is not a good time to contact Citi and renegotiate terms. Either rates and or payoff amounts?
