JERUSALEM (AFP) - A group of American Jews urged president-elect Barack Obama on Thursday to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which the international community does not recognise as the capital of the Jewish state.
The move would make the United States the only country to have its main diplomatic mission in Jerusalem, which both Israelis and Palestinians claim as their capital.

Former Israeli ambassador to the United States Danny Ayalon said that if the US embassy were moved to Jerusalem, other countries would follow suit.
"When it moves its embassy to Jerusalem, other civilised states will move their embassies here," Ayalon said.

Canadian history buffs will remember that Joe Clark, the supposed red-tory hero, actually managed to get himself elected Prime Minister on a platform that included moving the embassy to Jerusalem. It was the first campaign promise he tried to fulfill, and it was shelved after being subjected to widespread ridicule.

Yeah, because moving the embassy to Jerusalem would be politically beneficial to the United States. All (outside of Israel) would hail the decision as an excellent one, and a stream of "civilized" countries would soon follow suit.
The Jewish-American lobby has had too much influence for too long. US foreign policy needs to devised with the aim of serving the interests of the US, not devised to run counter to those interests for the sole benefit of another state (even if it is an ally).
Luckily, the idea of moving the embassy to Jerusalem is politically DOA. Nice try, jerk-offs. |

So, "urging" someone to do something is newsworthy now? What happened to reporting news as its happening.
Media has sunk to a new low. |

True that. And the if is a strong if. |

Well, I don't think this is quite the same degree of triviality as, say, some guy in a bar spouting off about where the US should have its embassy. First of all, the demand comes in the context of there already being an act on the books requiring such a move...

The Jerusalem Embassy Act requires the United States to move its embassy to Jerusalem by 1999, but both President George W. Bush and his predecessor Bill Clinton have deferred its implementation every six months.
|
Also, Obama himself has stated that he supports an undivided Jerusalem, a position somewhat at odds with the mainstream consensus, even in the US. So this demand from the Orthodox Union can be viewed as an attempt to push the envelope even further on that issue. |

That's what struck as the most amusing thing about the article. This idea that the US has such standing and credibility in the world that everyone else is just chomping at the bit to copy whatever Uncle Sam does. |
