This morning I was jogging with a friend and this farmer in a bongo truck who was overtaking us in the opposite lane slowed down to our pace, opened his window, and just stared at us for fifteen or twenty seconds as we jogged along and he drove along beside us. Actually I think he was staring more at my young, blond female friend than me, but he slowed down to gawk as we wondered if he wanted to say something and then he finally drove off. Why would he do that?
Today I was having a smoke with my coworker and he spat about five or six times. What kind of educated person spits all the time? The other day one of my high school girls spat on the steps as she was walking down to our school's cafeteria. Don't you think that's extremely disgusting and unlady-like behaviour for a 16- or 17-year-old girl?
Earlier today a little girl yelled 'Hello!' to me on the street for no apparent reason. Why would a kid do that to someone she didn't know?
Yesterday one of my best students fell asleep twice in class. She didn't look so great, but if she's that sick why's she even at school? I can't remember ever falling asleep in high school. Even if you're sick, don't you think that's kind of rude?
That's all for now. I'll be happy to keep you informed on what I see in sparkling Korea tomorrow. |

You don't remember seeing people fall asleep in high school? I didn't fall asleep in class, but plenty of kids fall asleep in Canada or America when you're teaching, but I never saw a Western female spit on the street.
It's a Korean tomboy thing, I guess. |

I've seen a sixteen-year-old girl spit on a classroom floor (I made her get down and clean it up). I was once in the lobby of a friend's apartment building when I saw a high school girl spit on the clean, new lobby floor. I shot her a look of disgust and she did it again (as I thought, damn you're lucky you're not my student). Another time I was walking up the main staircase at my school to be greeted by a big luggie on one of the stairs. I thought, this is just so damn disgusting that the next time I catch a student doing that I'm going to make her mop the whole stairs ... then I remembered, wait, I guess it could have been one of my coworkers. |

Guess what I saw last night? I was entering my officetel at about 9pm. A man with his golf clubs was waiting for his car to come down from the lift. He was talking on his cell phone. He couldn't distinguish the glass facade from the open entry way and kept bumping into the glass til he found his way. After watching him struggle, stagger, and nearly fall down for a brief time I told him he should not be driving anywhere. He told me that he was sorry. My work was done. I hope he didn't hurt himself or anyone else on his way to where he absolutely had to drive to. |

That's interesting. Last night at 2AM I got a ride home with my American friend instead of my Korean friend because my American friend was less drunk, even though I'm much closer with my Korean friend. I hope my Korean friend wasn't offended. Another friend who lives further afield took a taxi home even though my Korean friend would have driven him. In fairness my Korean friend is a very good drunk driver and is also skilled at dealing with the police when he gets pulled over. I just hope he wasn't too disappointed that we all left him to drive home by himself last night. Oh well, I'll make some compliments about his new fishing equipment the next time I see him and I'm sure all will be fine. |

Did you know that Western foreigners who are 60 years and older consistently hang out iwth 18 year olds, and that all Westerners have no respect for older people? The principal of a small elementary school in a rural area told me so, and I don't question the comments of older people, so it's absolutely true. |

Yesterday ( a bitterly cold day) I watched Korean students and teachers alike repeatedly enter the building and leave the door wide open. I decided to perform an experiment and go out, then follow one of them back in. Sure enough, I get a door in the face. |

well, first of all I'd like to say it's clear that the OP simply
DOES NOT UNDERSTAND KOREAN CULTURE !!
but I wouldn't be as "shocked" about this as most.
the farmer.. give the guy a break, he's probably never seen a yellow haired devil (I think there's a Chinese phrase like this), and he lives in a country where he rarely sees a decent pair of boobs much less a pooper with any oomph to it.
I'd stare too!!! (though would try to be sneakier about it)
I think little kids saying hello to me is enormously CUTE. And I always smile and say hello back! (of course if this happened to me non stop all day, I might get less charitable, but I have a big tolerance zone for little Korean kids (who are just the cutest things) because I know there is zero malice in their hearts and intent.
smartest student asleep because she's sick. She lives in Korea where people don't take "sick days" and I'm sure she's proud of "Korean culture". Get used to it
(on the other hand, one my students was complaining to me the other day about a teacher in his dept who whacked his calves for not doing something right in a lab in his electrical dept. He's having problems with a specific activity unlike the others and the teacher is whacking him for it. THIS did get me annoyed because I'd never ever whack a kid of failing at something despite giving it honest effort, even though I have zero issues, indeed ENDORSE whacking away at miscreants, troublemakers and other future "Korean white trash" in the making. But I had to laught when he said.. he devil I want to kill him. He meant it too!
the loogies on the school floor I have to agree on. As understanding as I try to be (and am) of differences in certain behaviors (for e.g. in Japan, in Shogun, a loud belch at the end of a meal showed an appreciation for the meal and its taste) and though I hate constant loogies period, I can tolerate them on the outside, but NEVER indoors, and at school.
Indeed, I'm going to hunt for the perps of the loogies in my school halls I have to avoid each and every day. |

I don't know. Maybe because he is a farmer?

I don't know. Yes.

I don't know. Maybe her parents told her to talk to foreigners when she sees one. Doesn't bother me when it happens to me.
Yesterday one of my best students fell asleep twice in class. She didn't look so great, but if she's that sick why's she even at school? I can't remember ever falling asleep in high school. Even if you're sick, don't you think that's kind of rude?
I don't know. Maybe she has nowhere else to go. I hope you tried to help her in some way. Not likely to be rude, because I doubt she has much control over the situation, being a school kid and all.
That's all for now. I'll be happy to keep you informed on what I see in sparkling Korea tomorrow.
Please do, it makes for fascinating reading. I guess I should get out more. |

I talked about the spitting thing with one of my friends recently and she kinda stumped me...I dislike spitting but she said its much nicer than swallowing it....and now i think about it, thats disgusting too...but how many people here sniff all the time?
Here we have people spitting on the floor
At home we have people bring their nasty stuff into their mouths and throats and then swallowing it.
a tissue would solve the worlds woes it seems..
PS, this is a question mainly to americans...do school kids spit in the US? Where im from, pretty much every boy in highschool spits constantly throughout the day..Or at least they did when i was in school. |

From one of my Hakwon students: "He is the English teacher at my school, and he is FAIL!!! He was uhh.. writing on the board, and he... made a mistake... and he said OH SHIT!! and this was not right and I want to kill him and destroy his body and make him go away from the world, also he is Chinese so he has melamine and he does not like BigBang and that is why he is so bad, and so he fails."
This was in one continuous sentence. I was waiting for her to breathe. |
