I recently bought an ATi 4850 and started getting heat related crashes. I've had to use Rivatuner to push my fan speed way up, and now my machine sounds like a dust buster. I should really have got a model with an aftermarket fan, but it's too late for shouldas. So my question. I've found Zalman VF-1000s on Gmarket for 40,000. Is that as good a price as I'm going to get? I can't seem to find a section for fans on danawa.

Are you using the latest drivers from ATI? The latest Catylst driver suite (8.10) has a manual fan-speed control. You can set the fan to any speed you like. Also, the 4800 series are designed to run hot. 70C at idle is no problem. They will go up to 90C when pushed. Shouldn't be an issue.

I'm using 8.11. maybe the new drivers messed up fan support, because when I change the fan setting a hit Apply in CCC I don't notice any change in the fan sound and the temp stays at 79/80. When I adjust it using Rivatuner the change in fan speed is instantly noticeable in terms of sounds and temp. I have zero case fans, and my card idles at around 80. Not sure what it's hitting in games, but apparently it's enough to cause the system to hang, unless I manually set the fan speed to 65%+.

No case fans! That might be the reason!! Get a couple of Coolermaster, Enermax or Zalman case fans in there. Front and rear. Then see how the temps are.

Also, if the fan speed function in CCC isn't working then I guess you've messed it up by using Rivatuner. Unless you really like using Rivatuner then I suggest you uninstall it and re-install CCC. That, combined with case fans, should get your temps under control.

40,000 for that GPU cooler is a good deal. And yeah, I whole heartedly agree with eamo. Get a case fan! Blowing hot air around your case is not going to sufficiently cool everything down.

My Nvidia 8800GT is overclocked and running hotter than I'd like to see but it's still reasonable. 48C idle and ~82C at load. If you're running at 80C at idle, that thing's gotta be cooking when you're playing games. You're probably risking some serious system damage.

It's running stable now, even if it sounds like a leaf blower. I might try the VGA fan this weekend. It'd be quicker than changing to a completely new case. Thanks Very Happy
