I know it might be a stereotype or generalization. But this is what most koreans think about english teachers in korea.

1. They come here because they can't get a job back their home.

2. Many of them aren't certified. (many of them come here without B.A. degree)

3. terrible fashion sense.

4. always making troubles

5. all they can do except speaking english is to get fucked up in the bar at hongdae or itaewon

6. making 2,000$/month

7. smell

see this video clip.

hope this stereotype will be changed.

I've been saying this for a long time, but all the expats are like 'no no, they need us and they love us.'

That video is old hat. I've seen it quite a few times. It shouldn't have even made news.

Can anyone give a summary of the contents of that video with a few notable quotes translated in to English?

Funny how their entire premise (foreigners are drunk idiots) is based on one guy. They keep showing the same footage over and over. I guess I will bring a camera around and film all the drunk ajeossis I see that can't even make it to the cab from the bar without the assistance of five of their friends and without leaving a trail of puke.

Same anti-immigrant rant used throughout history the world over.

#3 makes me laugh the most, the terrible fashion sense. If a trendy Korean person compliments me on my clothes, then I know that I must look bad.

3. I'll be sure to take my fashion advice from visor- and polyester-wearing ajummas or flood-pants- and black-socks-with-sandals-wearing ajosshis.

6. You're wrong. Every Korean I've talked to believes we make more than 4 or 5 million a month. Arguments from me to the contrary only make them angry at me for "lying".

7. Yeah, the overpowering kimchi and soju smell on an early morning subway won't knock the buzzard off a shit wagon at all.

You are what you make of yourself. If you're the only FT at a school and get along well with your co-workers the above points are pretty irrelevant.

My students all seem to believe that I'm rich, so I'm assuming their parents must tell them that about foreign teachers.

There are a lot of foreigners here that come to Korea for an extended vacation after graduating from uni. However, many of us are not here for that purpose.

So why do so many Koreans go overseas to study and work? Are Koreans all losers?

Quote:

2. Many of them aren't certified. (many of them come here without B.A. degree)

So maybe the Korean authorities should do their jobs and control the number of people like this. Wait, Korean authorities don't do anything at all except collect bribes.

3. terrible fashion sense.

Ridiculous. Koreans copy western fashion all the time.

Quote:
4. always making troubles

Such as? Korean employers often deceive their foreign staff, of course they make trouble.

5. all they can do except speaking english is to get fucked up in the bar at hongdae or itaewon

With thousands of Koreans doing the same thing. Koreans love drinking, don't try to deny it.

Quote:
6. making 2,000$/month

Is this good or bad? It means that they are making above the Korean average GDP of W20,000,000 per year. They are contributing to the economy, you should welcome them here.

7. smell

Wow. A Korean lecturing a westerner on hygiene. Will wonders never cease? The street outside my house, the street outside my office and the streets, well, everywhere, are covered in cigarette butts, huge globs of saliva, urine, garbage and feces. Open sewers are still common in many neighbourhoods, just like the 18th century in the civilized world. Koreans spit indoors all the time like medieval peasants, spreading infectious diseases like TB. How Koreans can even begin to think that they are cleaner than others is beyond me.
