Ive read various posts about mobiles but can't seem to glean the info i want. My question is this: Can I get a pay-as-you-go mobile phone if i am visiting on a tourist visa? I know i cant get a contract one because they want a bank account. Maybe what i want is also called pre-pay. i dont know. i just don't want (and cant get) a contract.
Is it possible, like here in europe, to pick up a cheap second hand handset and get a sim card for it. if so, what paperwork/requirements are there for getting the sim-card? |

Sorry, you need an alien card to get assigned a number. Maybe you could buy a phone, with number, from someone who's leaving. However, you may find that the phone stops working after the date the person you bought it from's visa expires. |

^not true, of course you can get a pay as you go phone. All you need is your passport, you just go and pay for a used phone usually around 50$ and a certain amount of minutes, when you run out you have to go back and add more, not very convenient but it works. You may have to get a Korean to go with you to explain what you want. You could also get a skypephone right at the airport, but I haven't tried that. |

Pay as you go phones get bought and sold all the time here. If you buy one from someone on this board it's likely to be registered to someone long gone from Korea. I think I've even got one in my name from 4 years and 5 visas ago that probably still works. |

You just need to use your passport. Go to one of the phone stores in Itaewon. They speak English. I don't think in Korea people deal much with SIM cards. I know people in the US deal with that if they use T-Mobile which is owned by Deutsche Telecom and Cingular Wireless.
Anyway, you can get a pre-paid phone or pay-as-you-go phone.
If it's based on your passport, it would be valid for maybe 2 months.
I am not sure exactly. Youwould have to ask one of the stores. |
