I'm trying to explain to my students the differences between "best" and "most". I cant really explain it and am hoping someone can!

What's the difference between

1. I like pizza the most.
2. I like pizza the best.

essentially, most is quantity while best is quality. However with the verb to like most and best are pretty much the same, but if you want to really get into it saying I like pizza the most is saying how much you like it, your quantity of liking, which is a lot, where as I like pizza the best is obviously ranking it with other foods, pizza is ranked above them

Another stellar English teacher in Korea. Where do they find you guys? Still, you get some points for asking, which is more than other alleged teachers do.

Explain it like this:

Most is the superlative of "many"

Best is the superlative of "good"

Many - more - most

Good - better - best

yawn..... I did explain it to her that MOST really refers to quantity such as: "who has the most points on the test?", and BEST as "who did the best".

She still didn't understand, that's when I posted this topic on here. So a mild insult from someone who doesn't know me isn't really helping. And judging me based on the fact I asked a question on grammar doesn't really say anything about what kind of teacher I am.

And to YOUR credit... you did get brownie points at the end.

Thanks Sand and Adeline!

Also, if you said 'I like pizza the best' you could be seen as commenting on your ability of liking. It could mean he/she is best at liking pizza. I wish I was as good as him/her. Crying or Very sad

If she can't explain it say that most is 많다 and best is 좋다. In korean most and best use a grammatical structure, rather than just one word. So she may not understand still but good luck.
