i am clueless about travellers checks in general never mind in korea, so if anyone could help me with these i would be really grateful.
i've heard horror stories of 'a friend of a friend' with travellers checks bought in korea then getting to whichever country and not being able to cash them in.
whats the best place to buy travellers checks in korea?
i'm travelling to thailand am i likely to have any problems?
do i have to buy/order them in advance of leaving korea?
in thailand do i just cash them in when needed at any bank?
sorry if these are really obvious questions or ones that have been covered before i tried to search the forum but no joy
thanks for any help! |

| I bought travelers checks at KEB last year. They were refused at Thai money changers, but there's usually a bank around that cashes them. I understand that if you were lose them, you'd have to be in Korea to get help in getting money instead of calling the international number for help. |

Just take cash. T/Cs are more of a pain in the azz than they are worth when travelling in SE Asia.
Make use of the safe at the front desk of the hotel or guest house you are staying at.
I don't know how long you are going for or how much you planned to take but seriously, $1000 is only 10 pieces of paper (10x$100). Put one or two in each pocket and don't worry about it.
You can cash Ben Franklins anywhere but cashing a T/C may take you a while (just to find a bank) then the paperwork and time to get it cashed.
They also do NOT have the same security or guarantees that you get when you are dealing a US company. If you lose them you will not get your refund until you get back to Korea (and even then it will take time).
You will also take an extra hit on the exchange rate when you go to cash them. Usually 1-4% worse than the cash rate.
