You guys are great. I have a lot of questions answered and its much appreciated. I have one more.

In my house I have a laptop and tomorrow I take delivery of a new desktop. I have a LAN cable to the notebook.

Is there some kind of splitter cable I can buy going from the little LAN box to both computers? Maybe a two way adaptor for the LAN line?

Cheers.

Yeah, easy. Get a router, and you can connect up to 4 (usually, sometimes more) computers using one internet connection. The connection goes from the wall to your modem, then to the router, then multiple lines out from the outer to the various PCs you would like to connect to the network. If you get a wireless router, you can connect to the network wirelessly with your laptop if it has the capability.

You have options....

A) find a RJ45 line splitter - i havn't seen them here but no doubt somewhere in Yongsan youll find it. Its a litte box where your existing plug goes into and end on the other side are 2 plugs where you can attach 2 lines for each machine
Something like this http://www.amazon.com/Network-Pair-Splitter-100-Single/dp/B000BSLXDE
or this
http://www.ebest24.com/en/rj-45-ethernet-network-splitter-extender-plug.html

B) Buy a hub, like a router but not, will do a similar job to the RJ45 splitter but cost more moeny

C) Buy a router - probably you have one now, the little box where your internet comes from but it only has one port for your current line right? will take config to get it working with your internet provider and cost way more money.

D) Have 2 NICs (network interface card) on the new PC. Plug the existing cable into the PC, get another cable from the laptop to the PC, this means the PC needs to be on for the laptop to use internet.
Probably most expensive and pain in the ass to set up.

If it were me id look for the RJ45 splitter, cheap and easy.

You can always upgrade to a router later down the track.

Bah, my router was 20 000won and took me 5 min to set up, no need to involve your ISP with the process.

Uh... if you have cable internet, you're going to need a router. A hub or a line splitter aren't going to cut it. You'll only be connected on one computer at any given time. DSL would be another story, but I think everybody has cable over here. If you have a notebook, you'd might as well get a wireless router. The box with one port in it is not a router. It's a cable modem.

Unless cable companies over here let you have multiple internet IPs, which seems unlikely.

If both computers are Vista OR both are XP then just have the tech add in an extra LAN card (about 7k won).

Plug your current cable into one LAN port and use a cross-cable to connect the 2 computers together.

Turn on internet sharing on the desktop. Done like dinner. NOTHING to configure and only 7k won.

Doesn't get much easier or cheaper than that.

A wireless router is the best solution. Then you can take your laptop anywhere in your apartment and still get the net. Chances are you won't need to configure it, unless you want to do all sorts of complex stuff regarding games and bittorrents. But if you did, you probably wouldn't be asking here.

The router is a one time cost of 30-50k. They're pretty cheap these days. Any configuring is a lot more user friendly than it used to be as well.

And please try to get someone to install English XP on your system, at least as a dual boot. I'm sure there's guys in Yongsan who will do that.
