I found an interesting map today illustrating the flow of migrants around the world; countries that received a surplus during the period from 2000 to 2005, and those that incurred a deficit in respect to their own citizens.

See map at: http://www.nytimes.com/ref/world/20070622_CAPEVERDE_GRAPHIC.html#

Are the 'green' countries really 'greener'? Are the 'orange' countries less desirable in which to live (Korea being an 'orange' country)?

What do you think?

I think it depends heavily on the person. What kind of lifestyle you're in to and how you want to live your life.

In a comparison between Canada and Korea the place with the larger net benefit is currently Korea. If things change in my life it might become Canada again or another country.

You've gotta wonder about the amount of propaganda countries have to attract immigrants...cough...cough...Canada...

They say all is great, all your credentials will be recognized, and getting a good job will be easy. But when Joe Kim goes to Canada and expects some great job, he'll most likely be disappointed. I guess, it doesn't help that Joe Kim has unrealistic expectations of what life would be like in Canada too.

Yes I've had to explain to a lot of Koreans what 40% tax means..and that we don't have the luxury of paying a big deposit to pay only $200/month (or nothing) in rent.

You know everyone I talked to before coming to Korea told me how expensive it is to live here and yet I live on far less than I did in Canada.

Interesting map.

I've got to wonder, about the figures though. Are those legal migrants they are referring to?

I see South Africa with migrants making up 2.33% of the population. Estimates put the figure of illegal immigrants in the 3million region (at a minimum, with Zimbabweans likely making over a million themselves) which would be more than triple the 2.33% figure. And let's not forget the legal migrants.

Zimbabwe has a net flow of -15,000 migrants. The figures I've seen show that flow to have been -3,000,000 MINIMUM in the last 10 years... -15,000 seems way off.

I notice people all over the world seem to be attracted to the notion of "higher culture." So I find it as no surprise that Europe is a hot spot. I really don't think it has more culture than some other areas in the world but it's illusions that count. And the U.S. is supposed to be the land of opportunity which can be true as long as you get your degree there first. Your foreign degree is useless most of the time.

Mexico and Latin America are known for their instability and high incidence of kidnappings and politically motivated murders. So the high departure rate isn't shocking either. As for Asia, most non-Asians would never think of moving to most of Asia because, well, it's so Asian. Unless it's something like pork fried rice, sushi or anime, most don't want anything to do with Asia.

In the end, everybody in the world has their reasons for moving elsewhere but I would imagine most choose to move to places where they believe they have better and more opportunities (money) and more liberties. Whether that turns out to be the case is questionable.

Korea has a small orange spot on it because it's already full of people. There is nowhere to go but out.

Its not about which countries are more desirable alone. It also has to do with which countries are possible to immigrate to. Here in Australia, for example, the immigration rules are lax so something like 5000 people come in each day. It makes finding a place to live nearly impossible; zero percent vacancy rate and 20 or 30 people competing to rent the average apartment... Most of the people are immigrants from poorer countries like India, Somolia, etc. It's pretty easy for them to come; all they need is to have "refugee status" or a skill or trade, or of course be married to an Aussie.

It's right next door the DR of the Congo...I think people are fleeing the Congo for the safety of Angola.

I haven't researched this though.
