|

Hey all,
What's the easiest way to pay my bills here in Korea (ie phone, cable, etc)? Can I do it at my bank?
All my co-workers just give their bills to the principal. But I'd rather do it myself. I'm not comfortable with all this Hagwon-hand-holding. And, frankly I don't think it's any of her business how I spend my money.
Advice much appreciated,

Try to make sure then that you get the bill directly. It seems that your boss gets the bills first in your case.

Nothing to it. Hand the teller all your bills & she'll stamp them, tear them apart & keep the stuff she needs, & total it up. You pay her the cash & she'll hand you back a neat stapled collection of receipts.
You dont need to explain anything. Near the end of the month the bank will be busy with lots of Koreans doing exactly the same thing. |

Circus: We all get the bills directly. But for some reason my co-workers give the bills to the principal to take care of.
Schwa: Thanks! That's great. One step closer to reclaiming my adult-hood. Now, if only I could wipe my ass alone. |

Your co-workers probably give him the bills so they don't have to walk to the bank and stand in line for the 5 to 10 minutes it usually takes to pay the bills at the end of the month and so the boss gets the receipts immediately.
As has been stated, just total up the bills if you get them directly (don't include the late charge because if you are paying on or before the due date you don't have to pay any extra) then hand the teller the cash and bills. She'll stamp the stubs for you and staple them, then just give them to your boss.
A word of advice here, photocopy the paid receipts so you have a record of what you've paid incase there is a dispute later on.
Also, many banks are now starting to accept bill payments through a machine in the bank. To use this machine you have to have an account with that bank. I tried to pay some bills at the local HANA Bank, because it's close. I've done it in the past, a few months ago was the last time. They had the bill payment machine in at that time, it was brand new. I paid at the teller without any problems. 2 weeks ago I tried and was told I could only pay the bills through the machine now and if I didn't have a HANA bank account then I could not pay my bills there.
Needless to say I was not very happy with this and will never use HANA bank for anything again including not transfering money with them.

You can also pay your bills at post offices. I have a small one near me that is more convenient than the banks. |
