anyone done it? is it insane (in a good way) or at least fun?

I did travel thru China once during the New Year - it was packed on the trains -

I haven't been to Beijing yet and am leaving K next spring (hopefully for good) may not be around Asia for a while - never did go to Beijing so am thinking now might be the time

recommendations on places to stay - and definitely what to see? other than Tinamen Square and the Wall - what else? how is it?

thanks!

I did it (last) this year and had a good time, but it was more b/c of the friends I went with than what we encountered there. The city was deserted, most restaurants/shops/touristy areas were closed or had limited hours.

The fireworks in the streets party on new year's was cool, tho. And we stayed at the red lantern hostel, which is the best hostel i've been to in asia. If you go to beijing defn go there.

is the fireworks in the street party the day before or the day of new year's?

do you know how to tell?

I'm thinking about flying on the 25th of Jan - am not sure exactly how it's celebrated there - would stay for a few days past so could do the tourist stuff afterwards

a friend of mine who used to live in Beijing said everything is closed pretty much for up to 2 weeks - including museums, restaurants, etc.

I've changed my dates of travel and wanted to let others know if they are thinking of going at that time.

Cheers!
