|
|
| Yesterday at work, my boss stated that the government in December is drastically reducing what a hagwon can charge and that the financial situation in our hagwon would be bleak. I can't seem to find anything that gives specific numbers. Is there anything out there? Has anyone else been given this information at their hagwon? |

| Someone will find a way to charge the parents more and many of the parents will pay it if they think it provides a possible edge. |

More likely your hakwon was one of the ones who got clipped in the crackdown last month for overcharging and is being fined (causing a bleak month or 2 while they pay off the fines) AND also being made to reduce fees back to within the legal limits.
Have no fear, it will improve in a couple months when they find another way to skirt the law.

does your contract happen to be coming up soon? because that would be a great excuse to ask you to stay but not give you a raise. |

Antoniothe great, no, I've only been here 4 months; however, one teacher was just hired, and a new teacher is being hired. Neither are receiving paid apartments. The teacher who just started this past week mentioned that he is obtaining no additional compensation for losing the apartment as the hagwon can't afford it. His contract also waives his severance pay. He is well qualified, and has a degree in Linguistics, but is Canadian-Korean, and perhaps they are discriminating against him.
Tompatz, you may be right the Department of Education was here auditing the school this past month and it seemed a pretty tense few hours. |

the hagwons will get money under the table.
Hagwon to Parent in private: You son Minsu is at a critical phase in his English education. But, Because of costs, we need to lower the class sizes. But..... if we had a little more money to cover the costs....then we will be able to keep Minsu at our hagwon. |

wow, that is a big big big red flag. that is total BS. First, you CANT have a contract that doesnt have severance pay. someone else can confirm this, but I am 95% sure that is illegal. and it is BS to not provide housing allowance, that is just like taking a 400,000 won or more pay cut.
If I were you, I wouldnt allow them to fall behind on pay. hiring a teacher, and retaining a teacher is quite different. hiring often just means paying a recruiting fee, but as the contract goes, expenses build, such as repaying arifare, monthly pay, plus the end of the contract plane, severance and last month's pay.
so as time goes, the owner must pay more, if they are already being stingy, be careful, dont let yourself get into one of those situations where the hogwon owes you 5,000,000 but you stay because you are scared if you leave you wont get anything.
just my two cents... |
