Why is it that so many of my students have these horrible silver caps in their mouths, especially with teeth that are right in the front? I have a student with a mouth full of them and I can't help look at them instead of in his eyes when he speaks. Where I come from, only old people have those and in the U.S., well, I guess you could call it bling. What's the deal?

Yeah but we have white caps in the U.S. to cover up the fact that we have bad teeth. There's something very wrong with seeing a 10-year-old with a mouth full of silver teeth.

The silver caps are cheaper. Perhaps the child's family can't afford the added expense of the white ones (?).

They cover their baby teeth, you know.. They'll fall out and then reveal the pearly whites underneath. Don't worry! Wink

Whats the point in spending money on teeth that are going to fall out?

At 11/12, those teeth under those caps are in there for good until they rot and can no longer be salvaged. That might take many years.

So how do you explain the fact that (most!) adults don't have those caps?

If you leave baby teeth unattended they might affect the new teeth.

Also, current generations eats far too much sugar relative to previous generations.

My son is the only one in class who has perfect white teeth at the age of 3.5.
But then, I never had any issues with teeth until I was 33.

I know!! What's up with that? I've got a few students who have stained gray teeth. I feel pretty bad for them considering the way people here talk about appearance. I guess they're used to it though.

I...see...plenty of adults with silver caps....

But yes, my kids were absolutely floored when I told them that when I was little I brushed once a day and as an adult only twice a day but still showed them a mouth full of big white beautiful teeth.

Ha! Yeah, same here on the hygiene practice. I have never had a single cavity or anything that required corrective measures, and I am starting to get up there in my years. Laughing

I used to notice all of the time at my old hagwon in Apgujeong, of all places, that the younger (kindy) aged students had a mouthful of those blackish baby teeth. I don't see that anymore in the middle school that I teach at (just halitosis).
