Why does korea censor music? turn on any t.v, there are no black bands, no white bands, nobody here knows LED ZEPPLIN, THE DOORS, THE STONES, RADIOHEAD, AC DC, HENDRIX, all of the great music from the past has seemed to vanished, even today, only certain songs are played. Why?????? Is korea insecure about music? Are they afraid koreans will adore the wonderful tunes of white and black musicians? are they afraid maybe the koreans will see that so many k groups ripped off tunes from the gods of music????What is the reason?
this is after a long discussion with gf and some of her friends, they are the ones who told me korea does not let them have music from the west. |

No.
Young Korean love American hip hop, to the point of worshipping/ emulating the "keeping it real" thug rapper crowd.
There is however almost zero interest/demand for rock. or rock flavored Western stuff here. |

actually there are government quotas on how much foreign music can be played on TV and radio stations. Koreans all listen to western music, including rock, but because of the government trying to promote their local music, it's rarely played on public stations, and if it is, it's relegated to off-hours. |

I'm puzzled too.
Like, why don't Koreans speak English? Why do they even bother speaking/learning Korean? Go figure.
I'm puzzled....

sarcasm aside ddeubel, your point is much different.
I didn't know the govt actually enforced some kind of quota on what can be shown on tv.
that's a bit totalitarian, don't you think?
Hugo Chavez has been doing the same in Venezuela.
I say let the consumer, not the govt decide, what sayeth you?
or maybe you like hearing and seeing the same old very stupid K-pop over and over and over again? |

you're so wrong. the WonderGirls and Boa are going to conquer the US market!
actually, it's not even so much the language barrier. it's just what you think will go over. K-pop will never go over in the US. The US had its one/two year fascination with boy/girl bands and that's gone probably forever.
Shakira and Buena Vista Social Club sold millions of CD's singing in Spanish.
Marc Anthony still does.
Not all British acts make it stateside.. and no Aussie do (with perhaps the exception of Kylie Minogue who's more popular elsewhere) |

So, who decides? Some ajossis sitting in the city hall?
Seriously, how did you find out about this goverment quota? |

There is simply no accounting for bad taste.
Hell. Most people back in America don't listen to "good" music either. |

i hate it when old dudes try to lecture me on what "good" music is... i can appreciate those bands. their tunes were significant for their time. but their time has long past (except maybe radiohead).
i had a step-dad that used to do the same thing. when i was young i would jam out to slipknot or mudvayne or hatebreed and he'd try to pump this old era crap down my throat all the time. he just never seemed to understand... each generation has to define itself. they do this through artists, political leaders, and certainly, music. the point, is not to try to force feed older generations views onto the younger ones, but rather, over time, allow the younger ones to develop their own tastes. if there was something of significance from previous generations, they will pick it up. how often do 16 year olds discover bob marley?.. like clockwork. how many university students get che guevara posters or shirts?... every one that went to a state school, thats how many.
but this is also subject to ur own personal taste. u say that classic rock is "good". i think sinatra and nat king cole were "good". i also feel that death cab for cutie and ben harper r "good". someone else may say that miley cyrus or the jonas brothers r "good". and some koreans listen to western music, to an extant. but right now, they love them some bubble gum pop. can't knock it. america did as well in the mid-late 90's. nsync and backstreet boys were everywhere. with time groups like wonder girls and big bang will fade. perhaps leading to a more mature "rock" like sound? or hip hop could come roaring back in a big way? no one can tell really. the idea is to let each new generation cultivate its own contribution. it may surprise u, but u just might like what they turn out. as that middle school metal head i used to be, i never thought i'd end up liking something by kanye west. but damn it, his beats r faunky
so u can either progress with the rest of us... or be like my step-dad. still cruisin in his beat up old ford, blaring stairway to heaven on his fm radio. in his own mind, he's still a carefree, rebelious, long haired 20 year old... to everyone else, he's just a sad old man that doesnt seem to recognize, the world has left him behind. |

haha, alabama. but what does that have to do with anything?
im just given the OP a hard time because he asked a ridiculous question about why koreans dont listen to american (or western) classic rock.... because this is korea, on the other side of the world, where theyve had very different influences for a millennia and this isnt 1970.
i'll pose this... millions of koreans consider this to be "good" music, why dont more people in the west listen to it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7ceMt7i_yc&feature=related |
