From my understanding, there are 2 different kinds of Universities in Korea: National and Private.

I've been offered jobs at both universities. The contracts are basically the same hours but the private university pays almost 25% more per month. Another diference is that the National University guaratees 5 months paid vacation whereas the Private University has a semi-haqwon attatched to it so I would be working in both departments and during the summer vacation the teacher I may have to work in the haqwon.

My question is, does anyone have any generalized preferences as to which kind of University has a better working atmosphere? Are private universites dominated mainly by money and the wishes of the students---kind of like a haqwon?

I work at a 'national' uni, and yes, they're a bit cheap. They don't pay airfare, don't pay for the visa run. What they do offer that is attractive is decent accommodation and a policy of benign neglect, which is to say, one is free to develop such curriculum as one sees fit. If you're in this racket in order to develop your teaching skills, then you can't go wrong. Now if only they'd put the heating on for more than one hour a day, I could stay in my office and be available.

Work at a college. Usually pay about the same as a privte U plus college students are lazy and would never attend a hogwan class during break time, so you get 5 months off too.

For the OP- what are your qualifications to work at a uni (if you don't mind me asking Wink

) or in more general terms-- what are the general requirements/qualifications to work at a uni (both national and private)? do you need a master's degree? From what I gather, this is not always the case...

sorry if this question has been asked before... but I am curious about this.

My interviewer told me that they deleted all Bachelor Degree candidates applications.

The university only interviewed those with Ph.D and Master (nearly completed master) degrees. I am almost done - 1 more semester left. I was short litsted but, in the end, didn't get the job. A Ph.D got it.

A Ph.D - Curious, how many Ph.D EFL'ers are out here in Korea looking for teaching work?
