I guess I'm wondering why there are so many negative posts on this board? If people are getting screwed out of money, hours, etc and the won sucks right now, why do people stay/come? I mean, why not just leave? I see posters who have been in Korea 2+ years, why?

I am thinking about getting a job at a hagwon (esl-planet), but from this board, I wonder if I should just forget it and find a job in the states instead.

I have posted 2 threads in the last 3 weeks and have only gotten 2 responses to my newbie questions, what's with the lack of help?

Miso

I'd tell you why but it would just cause more drama and negativity.

You need to be, 25-30, White, and preferrably a 110 lbs. female, 5'3, and built like a brick #&$%house.

I would recommend getting an EPIK public school job, but not a hagwon. Nearly all of the complaints about getting screwed over center around unscrupulous hagwon directors cheating foreign teachers.

Based on my experiences here it seems the people who really complain about the country and their job are the people who are very closed-minded about being in Korea even though they came out here for a different experience. Pretty much if you're out here, experience the cultural difference because its going to be different in many regards but also very similar in other ways.

As for the job part of it, as one of the posters said, if you can get a job at a public school it does mean more work hours but the job is going to be better quality overall since you don't have to deal with directors who are out to screw you for themselves.

As for myself, I've only been here for 6 months as a teacher but I've lived in Korea before and the country has been good to me even if my hakwon hasn't.

why all the negativity?

all the negatives of living in Korea

public school problems abounding, also

besides

these polls are inaccurate
people reading these forums thinking of coming here should be aware that you will make practically nothing now because of the worthless won and the exchange rate and

that many people posting positives on korea on these thread are probably recruiters, hogwan owners, or koreans

I'm none of those and quite happy here. If you don't like it you're free to leave, never come back and never think about it again.

well, that's nice that you are none of them

however, you don't have to take it so personal -

many ARE leaving

Some people are actually here because they're interested in Korea as a country and not just for the job. So a little up down on the policies, won, etc are pretty immaterial.

Well, here's my thing. I am already in Korea visiting family in military. I LOVE Asian culture and would like to study Korea and use it as a launchpad to visit other cultures like Japan, China, Thailand, etc. I wouldn't send won home unless the exchange was good, so I don't see that as a problem, but I would like to save some won for my travels. I have a BA in sociology, as long as I can live and travel everything else is really trivial to me.

Any advice would be very appreciated. Also, what's the average salary for a BA?

Thanks!

Miso

Come over and find a job.

It is difficult to assess an employee or an employer from overseas. Only the most desperate people/orgs do it. Most people who come over here can't afford showing up in person, so they get put through the meat grinder that is the bottom end of the industry.

Generally, after you do one year, things get better.
