Hello everyone,
I need advice about trying to take a desktop computer with me. It is a very nice custom built gaming one with all the bells and whistles and I hate to sell it before I go.
Is it possible to take one on an airplane? I still have the original box and packing. Do they charge you for it? Last time I had extra luggage they charged 10,000 w per kilo. Ouch! That would probably be over 200-300k won.
I also do not really trust them to ship a computer in the luggage compartment of an airplane. I have seen how things get thrown around. I am afraid it would get smashed.
Could I take it as carry on luggage maybe?
I will be going to Thailand and then maybe in another 6-12 months on back to USA. So it would be 2 transfers.
So if there is a good chance it will get broken up or cost too much, I guess I will be forced to sell it. But damn, I really don't want to.
Are there any other options and what is the cost? |

Deliver it to your new address, and make sure to write FRAGILE with big red letters on top.
And insure it.
And put lots of packing peanuts in the box.
I doubt you'd be allowed to carry-on a big box full of computer on a plane. |

I have regularly checked a desktop PC inside a large suitcase (padded with clothing). They have ALWAYS arrived safely and I have yet to go over my weight allowance (remember that most folks only get 20kg TOTAL weight allowance per ticket/seat (unless they are going to north America).
The average PC is about 9-10kg in the case (about 7 without case and P.S).
Taking the monitor as well is another matter. They usually run about 5kg and with the desktop would chew up the best part of your free baggage allowance.

| YOu could always take out the critical components, ship it here and build a new computer from that. |

| You are only allowed 2 bags at 50 pounds each, plus one carry on piece, and then you can usually get away with a small purse, backpack, or man-bag as well. I was maxed out and I didn't even have a laptop with me...my motherboard went down about a week before I came here. I didn't really bring too much stuff either. I brought some of the wrong stuff, but not really that much. |

| I'm curious about this as well...My PC would fit into a carry-on bag. Is there any reason (security?) the airline would not let me carry it on? |

Again...simply take it apart, mail the components back to your house...computers like legos...it's just a bunch of parts(about 12-16)....leave the Power supply and case here(sell them...I might buy if it's nice) and buy a new one back in the states.
You don't wanna see what the shipping costs are...try at least $100...if your lucky... |

Ok, not a bad suggestion...but really, i'd rather just put it in my carry-on bag. Can I do it? |

That's gonna be a big carry on bag unless it's a small case.... |

| I carted my computer around the world, literally. The only time I had trouble was when I shipped. Either Thai or Czech post fked it up royally. Every other time I just put it in a case box with the polystyrene, wrapped it up in bubble wrap and checked it with my suit case. I'm pretty sure it would be too big to qualify as carry on, unless it's one of those really small home theatre PCs. |

I brought an amm in one desktop. One of those HP's. I had a big suitcase as the monitor is attached. I did pack it tight with pillows around it and clothing. I did this for two trips and in both cases it arived safetly.
One thing to note. I not sue if you have a warrenty on your computer. If you leave your home country the warrenty may become invalid. |
