Good camera, not so good price.
With this type of Fuji, someone knew to digital photography can still get very good results, and someone more knowledgeable can still enjoy using it. So it is a camera you can grow with. Best of all, it uses AAs. This type camera is becoming rare.
the S5800 is a non-American model, so you can't easily compare it to dollars. But this price is steep, compared to non-Korean prices. There are other better Fujis in the price range, I believe. But the won, especially the won-yen, is shifting so fast, it is hard to know what a reasonable price is.
Someone was selling a similar Fuji used recently here.
Here is a price on gmarket:

I would probably go with the s8100fd in this price range:
http://global.gmarket.co.kr/challenge/neo_goods/goods.asp?goodscode=151705350&pos_shop_cd=SH&pos_class_cd=111111111&pos_class_kind=T&keyword_order=fuji+finepix+s8100fd
or:

But I am not up on the current Fuji line. Models are always changing. You've got to do your own homework -- unless someone else has first-hand experience.
One bit of advice: Low light sensitivity is more important than pixels these days, once you get over about 6 mp. Look at sample pictures shot at 400, 800, 1,600 iso.
One place to see samples is on flickr.com, using the camera model sort.
Happy shooting. |

I haven't a clue if they are gray market. Gray market has nothing to do with the place of manufacture. It only affects the warranty.
It seems to me that in Korea prices vary widely. Consumers here are very gullible, and genuinely believe if something is more expensive it must be better, so.... But sometimes they are right.
The real question is whether any of this stuff is refurbished.
As to warranty, my experience is with a good brand like Fuji it is irrelevant. If it works out of the box, it's going to work for the length of the warranty unless you break it, in which case you are SOL.
Go to U.S. sites like Amazon.com and B&H
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/category/989/Digital_Photography.html
to get an idea of the product and a reasonable price. And read reviews online.
Fuji makes fine lenses and easy to use cameras. I have known many people who have used them out of the box, sometimes without looking at the instructions, who got fine pictures. Do read the instructions, though. |
