Once in a while I'll hear students blurt out the f-word, or sh!t If I hear a kid using those words, I'll usually talk to him or her while the rest of the class is involved in some activity. How do you deal with profanitiy used in your class? Most of the Korean teachers don't care whether they swear in English or Korean |

usually ignore it.......if i make a big deal out of it they will say it more often. ignore it and take the fun away from it and they get bored. its mainly something they do to get attention and reaction.
if its in anyway directed at me then its a very different story. |

i beat them, teach them it is not okay. i will explain the meaning in korea, i think many times they dont fully understand the meaning, they think those words are just like "shoot" or "darn" when i explain what it really means, they usually are emberrassed and never say it again. |

Thanks to my Korean highschool buddy (Thanks sung)
I know all Korean swears at the drop of a dime. You know how they do that "Ahhhh Shii...."
lol.
Anyways, Korean swears I tend to glare at them a bit. Not in a threatening manner but just sort of like, "You're still a child?" (I have middleschool kids so they're trying to prove something). Like a condesending look, gives them the idea pretty quickly. Body language is a powerful tool. I don't want kids swearing in my class. It's werid though, one of my co-teachers let it fly... but then again she couldn't control them to save her life.
If it's English swears I tend to a flip outa bit mentally. I don't think it's ok for kids to start shouting out "F F" even "Shut up" gets me riled up a bit. But I usually calmly but sternly say "No, don't say that". They don't get it the first time, I repeat it. 3rd offense I come up to them, and stare them down. I go "I thought we had an agreement, I thought you understood not to say that". It makes em feel so akward they go back into their shell. But you gotta have piercing eyes that strike their soul down. I couldn't do this till just about a few weeks ago. Now I can control the students with just my eyes... Oh yes the power. |

Had my Grade 5's draw a snowman and put sentences inside. One student drew the snowman giving the finger, showed me and said f you.
My reaction was definately not of the ...wait and talk to him quietly ...variety. |

If it isn't directed at you, then usually I say ignore it. However, if it is directed at you or another teacher, that's when you need to flip out. |

I'm a really easy-going teacher. But lately I have been flipping out more at students' shocking behavior.
Kicked a kid out of class for the first time today because he was calling a girl, while she was doing a presentation, "pig".
That stuff hurts more than any swear word.
(really highlights the gender inequalities, consider the boy was considerably fatter than her). |

Starting soft then going hard is just looking for trouble. |
