Ok now I have got to do something about my sink. Everytime I'm near it, I want to vomit. I just finished my week-long cleaning spree on my 400 square foot apartment (who knew one person could leave behind so much filth!!!) and the last thing left to do is to make my sink not smell so foul. Do they have something like Drano here, and if so, where is my best bet of finding it?

Thanks!!!

Try soju first...seriously buy the GIANT bottle...heat it in a pot and pour it down the sink.
-I do this and it works. You're either smelling food particles rotting high in the pipes... or you're screwed...as after the trap/no clog drano won't sit in your pipes but go right out the main stack.

Guys, guys, guys... Don't heat the soju... Heating it enough to do anything will boil off the alcohol and you just bought a jug of hot water. Use bleach to clean out the u-bend. If that doesn't work, buy a new u-bend and get maintenance to put it in for you, it should cost a mannon.

in the mean time get yourself a sandwich/ziplock bag fill it half full with water and stick it over the drain. Hey presto the smell has gone.....till you lift it off again. Good as a quick fix though.

I have the same problem, I can't stay home, it's disgusting!! My bathroom actually smells like kimchi, and my kitchen like, uh, I don't know.

It may be time for them to pump out the sewage system in the building. They drive around those big tank trucks to do this from time to time. Once I made cookie dough with eggs and put the wrong kind of sugar (near sugar -- triple power) in instead of regular. I dumped the whole batch down the drain, and it stunk up the pipe system to high heaven - the whole building! Rank smell oozing out of the sink! They pumped it out, not knowing that I did it. Hahaha.

HAHAHAHA -- that cookie dough story has me cracking up!!!! Well at least you got a good story out of it!

Ooh kimchi smells in the bathroom, that must be awful Sad i should count my blessings. what bugs me about this in particular is that it's not MY filth but someone else's. somehow that makes it that much more repulsive...

i guess i'll try the bleach idea and if that doesn't work i'll get one of those U shaped thingys and see if i can bully maintenance into changing it out for me.

Make sure you bring a photograph of the U-bend with you to the hardware store. And for the love of GOD do not use Drano. If that building is old and you *beep* up the rusty old pipes with HCl, they will sue you for replacing them all.

Bleach fixed my drain and I wasn't even trying. I was using the sink as a bucket while I cleaned the rest of the disgusting musty-smelling grime-caked apartment.

Ummmm. Have you tried cleaning out your drain catch? There is a little mesh filter that sits in your sink to prevent food from getting washed down. If you leave it for too long the food builds up and rots. You're supposed to clean it after every time you wash your dishes.

But maybe that's not the problem. I feel like it's too obvious.

There are a few things you should do about the drain catch. You should clean it, but also there are some special salts that hang on little strings, and will melt away. They kill bacteria and stuff in the traps.

I did clean out the drain catch already, and scrubbed it along with every other filthy item in my apartment. I poured about a half a bottle of bleach down the drain last night and that worked. I'm glad it did, because upon closer inspection I noticed that my kitchen sink doesn't have a U-shaped thingy, just flexible piping attached.

Eew...

Yeah, it has one (or something like it), it's just not anywhere you can get at it to fix or replace. All drains have a U-bend. Why? It fills up with water and keeps sewer mainline gas (and other nasties) from coming up the drain into your house. The problem is, a lot of crap builds up in that u-bend, including some horrendous stench-giving bacteria.when you pour bleach in there and let it sit, the bleach takes the place of water - and not even HIV can live in bleach. It's the everything-killer. You might want to just, once a month or so, like every time you post your gas meter read, pour a pint of bleach in there before you go to bed at night to keep your drains smelling fresh and sparkling. It's a good thing.

Love,

Martha Stewart.
